1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer V6
Summary:
A piece of crap!
Faults:
Paint scratches; dents and rusty hole in the roof, stain on dashboard when I got the car. Within 20,000kms - rear wiper would wipe only half of the rear window; car would not start in cold weather (repaired under warranty). Transmission replaced and leather seats starting to crack (despite applying leather conditioner on a regular basis) by 50,000kms. Also several recalls including the Firestone Tire recall. By 70,000kms transmission replaced again, rear wiper still wiping only part of the window, underside of rear doors starting to rust (despite purchasing rustproofing from dealer). Dealer also told me that I needed to replace the fan belt because it was cracked and that I had to replace the ball joints because they were loose. Fortunately my father is a licensed mechanic who changed the brakes just before I brought the car in. Those dishonest people at the leadership lied to me and tried to milk me for unnecessary repairs. Not only do I have an unreliable SUV that I paid $50,000 for, but the dealership lacks any sort of ethics whatsoever!
General Comments:
I never felt safe driving the Explorer (even before the Firestone Tire recall). It just feels like it will roll over if you turn too harshly or drive too fast on the highway. I drove it on grass once (10% incline) and I was very scared because it felt as if the SUV was going to roll over. I should have bought a Toyota or Honda, but fell for the 0% financing Ford had. You know that there must be a reason some car makers are offering this financing! I will NEVER EVER BUY ANOTHER FORD IN MY LIFE. Found on road dead! This is the true meaning of the crap FORD makes.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I am picking up my 1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 2WD from the dealer this afternoon after its 120,000 mile check-up. This may be the best car I have ever owned. I bought it new and have carefully cared for it. It has had two brake jobs and is on its 3rd set of tires. It had some serious transmission work done at about 80,000 miles, all under the extended warranty. They are replacing the ball joints this time as well as the throttle body assembly. The dealer is a close friend and I trust his people so don't think they are taking advantage; especially since I was complaining about it not starting as smoothly as it had in the past. I too like Ford products. I hope their Escape Hybrid is a dependable as my Explorer has been as I have my eye on one in 2008 or 2009.

I have a 1999 Eddie Bauer Explorer myself and I absolutely HATE IT! It is a piece of crap!
Every time I turn around there's always another problem that needs to be fixed! Trust me, these trucks have problems lurking beneath the surface, just give it time if you just bought one, you'll see. They nickel and dime you to death!
This truck is a very bumpy rough ride, nothing smooth at all, it literally feels as if this thing is just going to fall apart. And not only that, even if there wasn't problems with them, they really are just BORING vehicles to drive. There's nothing fun about them and the inside of them are cheaply, CHEAPLY made! Very cheap looking plastic components inside. Seats are not comfortable either.
I really hate this truck! I'm going back to Nissan, never ever again will I stray to piece of crap Fords! They suck! I'm getting into a Nissan this week, I cannot wait to be rid of this hunk of junk!
