1999 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0

Summary:

A good trade in for a Hyundai

Faults:

Emissions issues : Replaced entire exhaust, EGR and related units, fuel filler neck and hose, camshaft timing sensor, EGR solenoid, and front right wheel hub, which has wheel bearings pressed in.

General Comments:

Check engine light will not go out. Either the intake manifold gasket or the head gasket leaks.

Door is ajar light stays on in the winter season; had to remove all dome and door lights to save the battery.

Intermittent headlight switch issue where headlights stay on until car is turned off.

Except for these issues, it looks nice and rides well. Expensive repairs are yet on the horizon.

1999 Ford Explorer Sport 4.0

Summary:

Best purchase ever

Faults:

Only thing that I have found to be wrong with my Explorer, is it makes a squeaking noise sometimes, and the air doesn't get as cold as I think it should, or the heat get as hot as it should.

General Comments:

When I bought it, the clutch was slipping, that was 2 years ago. I'm still driving it with a bad clutch. It's like the Energizer Bunny. It keeps going and going.

I love it, I am so pleased. Besides normal expenses like plugs, wires, tires and oil, I have put no money in this thing. How cool is that?

I was leery to buy a Ford from all the rumors, but am so psyched I did.

If you're gonna get one, get the manual transmission. All my friends that have automatics have had transmission problems.

Check and see if you have a cabin air filter. If so and it has not been changed in a long time, it can decrease the A/C and heat considerably... Good luck.

1999 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer 302, 5.0 V8

Summary:

Strong tough truck; dependable

Faults:

Had tires and a major brake-job done which was way past due when I purchased it. Otherwise, the only thing is the radio lights like to go off. Oil pressure gauge likes to stick when cold but "jumps" back to correct when heated up.

General Comments:

This truck runs like new. Compression is STRONG and although it likes the fuel, I've had much worse. All told I have had NO trouble out of this truck and would not hesitate to drive it anywhere, any distance. We've taken many family trips in it and it's the one of the most functional, handiest vehicles I've owned. Leather, paint, fit and finish, all are still great at 142k. Powerful V-8 engine and tranny still hossin'.

1999 Ford Explorer Limited 4.0 OHC V6

Summary:

Good reliable SUV - buy used avoid depreciation hit $!

Faults:

Not much actually, unless you consider brakes/shocks and tires unusual maintenance items.

We have owned a previous Explorer XLT 99' on lease had about 42,000 miles with no problems, so it was a no brainer when we looked at SUV's two years later & found a 99 Limited for $6K 5 yrs old. Unfortunately terrible resale value as with most American cars/trucks. (HINT buy used!)

Leather seats with heat are grear!

Some electrical issues fuses blowing out - door locks dealer can't locate problem.

Horn also at times, otherwise than these electrical issues, a good vehicle.

General Comments:

As seen here, maybe we got lucky (2x?) the Limited was a maintained service fleet vehicle, so some of the people here (not all) should not ignore maintenance items when needed. I.E. don't let things go!

Good handling, decent ride, comfortable with leather seats, economy OK about 18 MPG mixed city/highway.

I perform spark plug changes, air filter, fuses etc. normal maintenance items. No rust issues, bad rear wiper location, back door takes a little effort to shut, BUT easy in/out, very good cargo space!
