1999 Ford Explorer

Summary:

Very dependable vehicle!!!

Faults:

Most of my problems were just irritating nothing I couldn't live with. Some of the problems were created by my children. The back wiper never did work quite right. Tried to get it fixed with no luck. I finally gave up on it. It worked whenever it wanted to. The automatic locks keep blowing a fuse taking the automatic locks and the driver seat adjustment out. When trading drivers just changed fuse. (this is what you get when the kids play with the locks) Somehow the kids broke one of the backseat seat belts. Limited who I could transport. The dashboard console padding was starting to come apart.

General Comments:

I really like my 99 explorer. I really had a hard time trading it in just recently. We did have to replace oxygen sensors twice, but the overall reliability has been great. My explorer always got me where I was going. I needed that as I traveled quite a bit of distance with just two small kids. The vehicle did ride very rough, but me and the kids thought that is kind of cool. (unless I had to sit in the back seat). I would still have it, but my kids were outgrowing the backseat. We traded it in for an 06 explorer. Crossing my fingers that we have a good of luck with this one. I had always heard bad things about explorer, but with regular maintenance we put very little money in to the vehicle.

My 1999 Ford Explorer is the car that has convinced me to never buy another Ford product again. Over 6 recalls ranging from the Firestone issue to driver's seat problem and wiper switch. Rear wiper was crap not to mention the idle motor that has gone out and had to be replace 5 times. Forget cranking your car on a humid morning when the idle motor is acting up. My wife has to hit the idle motor with a hammer to get it to work if the car doesn't crank. The car is one thing, but Ford service is a joke. After the idle motor went out, we took it in and was replaced. So they said. The idle motor when out a week or so later. I called Ford Corp and they didn't care. Build crap and Americans will buy from Japan and Germany.

General Comments:

I love my explorer. My parents bought it for me for my birthday. It is a very reliable vehicle. It is quick. It can keep up with a lot of cars. It is also good a off roaking. I plan on keeping my Explorer for a while. The only thing I don't like is how much gas it sucks up. It seems like it is empty the day after I fill it. But over all I love it. It's a nice sporty vehicle.

I own the same vehicle, and also submitted my own review. One thing I have to comment on though is fuel consumption. I don't know how many vehicles you have owned in your life-time, but I assume this is your first SUV as you stated your parents bought it for you. I conclude you are very young. Yes, gas mileage is not the greatest, but having owned a few SUV's and having lot's of friends with them I can tell you it is one of the better mid-sized SUV's for fuel consumption. I believe people have to realize they are not driving a small compact, therefore they are not going to get the best gas mileage. It is very good for a mid-sized SUV and with mine I almost get the same mileage out of a tank of gas as I did with my 1998 Lumina. I agree, it is a great vehicle - good luck and have fun!
