Faults:

I have dropped a drive shaft at 120,000 miles. I replaced the water pump, changed the alternator twice, There is a small oil leak, but not enough to pull the throttle body off and fix it. there is also a small power steering leak, but I think it is just the hose.

General Comments:

This has been the best truck I have ever had. I have put this truck through hell since the first day I've owned it. It still drives really good for what it has been through. On the highway it handles great and I can still get it up to about 115 mph. Off road it handles even better. The suspension isn't as hard as most trucks so it it real easy to go fast on rough terrain. Just because it is two wheel drive doesn't mean you can't go mudding in it either. I'm running BF Goodridge all-terrains on it and I have never been stuck. It will go through some pretty serious mud where my friends have gotten stuck in their four wheel drives. It's great for hitting things too. I have an add on grille guard and a replacement back bumper so I can run over pretty much anything without damaging the truck ex. deer, trees, other cars and hogs. Where I live the deer are extremely overpopulated in town so my truck does a good job of controlling the population, if you know what I mean.

Faults:

I have kept up with all the recalls. There were 4 of them: the fuel tanks, the ignition, the front seats, and the transmission.

As far as maintenance, I have replaced a heat sensor, a window motor, and a radio.

General Comments:

This truck performs well.

This truck tows my trailer well.

This truck has an extremely smooth ride for being a 4 X 4.

Faults:

Rust:

I've replaced the oil pan. Yes, can you believe that something filled with oil rusts out? Incidentally, I live in Virginia and they don't use salt on the roads here so why the pan of all things rusts out is beyond me. Repair is very expensive: $600 bucks.

Exhaust Manifolds:

Yes, both have cracked which is apparently the norm for these vehicles.

Repair costs: $250 each side (I now have $500 bucks tied up in replacement exhaust manifolds!!! --- these things never fail on other manufacturer's vehicles)

Fuel System:

Both front and read gas tanks went at 75,000 - 80,000 miles --- internal sending units!! And of course, I'm on the third fuel selector switch ($100 bucks a copy)

Transmission:

The vehicle uses a Automatic Overdrive (AOD) transmission that is (frankly) not built tough enough for this vehicle --- first rebuild at 77,000 miles and it's ready for another now.

Note: fortunately it isn't the E4OD used by Ford these years. My son has one of these in his 1991 F-450 and he's now on the fourth transmission.

Faults:

A lot...

All within the past 10K... alternator, water pump, thermostat, serpentine belt, driver side power window motor, radiator and some more little stuff. Oh, drive shaft came off!

Lots of electrical problems, but they were my fault b/c I messed up the compact disc player installation.

General Comments:

Overall I love my truck. When it goes its tough, the 4WD kicks, but, and I've only been stuck twice, and that was in a ditch, and in a 3 foot deep mud hole where I bottomed out. I took off all my piping after the second catalytic converter and this guy rumbles!

Acceleration sucks, but you gotta trade something for raw power (I pulled our tractor out of the ditch once in 4 low).

I have a 5th leaf spring in the back so the back rides high, and I can hold extra loads. Defineately a good thing to have.

Overall, when this runs, which it will for about 4 weeks before something goes, I love this truck. Overall its great, and I'm a little hard on it around the house and mud, so take that into consideration too.

Faults:

Rebuilt front end (ball joints) at 70K.

New AOD tranny at 80K (own fault to heavy load).

Valve cover gaskets at 100K.

Swapped up to a Detroit Locker rear end at same time as the tranny.

General Comments:

Only discrimination I have is the 89 - 90 F150's seem to have a bit too small of rear brakes. Have remedied the problem by putting motor sport "Explorer" rear disk brakes on.
