2003 Ford Focus SES hatchback 2.0

Summary:

Our best car ever

Faults:

Nothing.

Oh yes, I had to top up the brake fluid several times the last couple of month I had it.

General Comments:

This has been our best car (and we've owned a VW and a Volvo before).

We were looking for a small car that could fit a family with 3 kids for mostly city driving, and this 5-door hatchback fit the bill perfectly.

Plenty of power to drive within speed limits in Canada. Would probably get you in trouble if let loose.

Excellent visibility all around. Fits is small parking spots. Perfect car for the city.

With rear seats down, the hatch is huge for a car that size. I've been transporting 8ft pieces of lumber many times.

The 5-door hatchback came with excellent equipment (SES with winter package).

Downsides:

- Fuel economy is poor. Around 10l/100km on average (even worse in winter).

- The engine/gearbox is not very smooth, to put it mildly.

- Comfort, especially in the back, is poor.

Would I buy a car from the same manufacturer? Sure I ended up getting another Focus.

I just don't get why Ford discontinued the Focus hatch and wagon in Canada.

"I just don't get why Ford discontinued the Focus hatch and wagon in Canada."

You are not the only one. Hatch and Wagon are discontinued for the US as well. I think Ford is afraid they would eat into the sales of the Escape, Edge and Flex.

Summary:

Great car

Faults:

Motor mount replaced due to front end fender bender.

General Comments:

Was a very dependable car. I did nothing to the car except normal maintenance i.e. brake pads, and replaced the battery and new tires...

The car met its end on a So Cal freeway when it was rear ended and shoved into a pick-up truck. The car held together nicely and my daughter walked away with nothing more than a broken little finger - the car was totaled.

2003 Ford Focus SE

Summary:

Piece of Crap

Faults:

I have already had to change an alternator 4 times in this car, replace a transmission, fix a water pump and two windows broke due to something with the power window button... the car is a POS. I will never own a ford unless it is a truck...ever again... currently as we speak my car has been in the shop for 2 weeks... I get it tomorrow...I'm trading it in this week for a new car...

This has been the worst almost 2 years with this car!

General Comments:

Just that it had good gas mileage... I bought this car for 4000...bc I had an insurance payoff... but have spent almost 7000 in repairs... not worth it.. hope to break even...*HOPE*

Before you change the car, change the shop. If you burn alternators at that rate there must be a short or faulty wiring. Your shop should have figured that out. Maybe there is corrosion in a ground contact or something simple like that.

If you got a 2003 Focus for only $4,000, doesn't that sound like too good a deal? It was probably wrecked, or recovered from a lagoon after hurricane Katrina, or a "South Chicago Special".

Summary:

Excellent car, no issues at all

Faults:

Nothing at all.

General Comments:

It amazes me how many people put in bad reviews on this car. I live in Northern Ontario where the temperatures get well below freezing and I have NEVER had a problem with this car. I admit, I was very nervous about buying a Ford of any kind. I have always owned GM vehicles without much hassle, but I thought I would give this a try. I took it to my mechanic and paid the money to get it looked over (brother is the mechanic) and he said it was fine. My Focus has over 100,000 kms on it and I bought it with 80,000 kms on it. I travel all over for work and love my car. Nothing rattles, shakes, squeals, leaks, anything. My model is loaded, and I had a Cavelier before this that was loaded and I had a lot of electrical problems. Bottom line to me is that buying any car from any manufacturer is the luck of the draw no matter what. They all break down or need service sometimes. Stick to what works and what you like.
