1965 Ford Galaxie 500 352

Summary:

Great Classic Cruiser

Faults:

I had to replace all fuel lines, brakes, wheel bearings and carburetor.

General Comments:

Drove this car 1100 miles before replacing the fuel lines, brakes, etc. After all it is 50 years old. She now purrs (loudly) and is a joy to take to local shows.

Got 22 miles per gallon on that 1100 mile trip. Around town is 12. It is a heavy car, but the ride is smooth, doesn't turn on a dime, but the ride makes up for it. Turns heads. It is a Springtime Yellow convertible with a Palomino interior. The 352 is great to tool around in and has enough HP to feel like I'm back in the 60s.

Still enough around to be affordable in the Classic Car Market.

1965 Ford Galaxie 500 289c.i.d.

Summary:

My '65 Galaxie does turn a lot of heads

Faults:

The oil pan gaskets leak a little.

The driver's side of the front seat has started to wear badly.

The weatherstripping is old and worn.

General Comments:

The car has an AM radio built in the dash that cannot be replaced. The power and sound this little 289 puts out beats a radio any day!

A little 289 in a big ol two-ton Galaxie, yet you rate performance a 10/10, hmmmm...

"The car has an AM radio built in the dash that cannot be replaced."

Well, it can... but replacing it with anything other than another original AM radio would require some, uh, "modifications". How many 50s/60s cars had their metal dashboards permanently butchered in the 70s/80s, just so someone could get their new Kraco or Sparkomatic AM/FM/8-track stereo mounted in the radio opening? :(

1965 Ford Galaxie 500 390

Summary:

Everyone should have one!

Faults:

Seats are worn badly.

Upper control arms had to be replaced.

Fuel sending unit had to be replaced.

Weatherstripping is beginning to deteriorate.

Distributor had to be replaced.

Timing chain and gears had to be replaced.

General Comments:

This car is truly a joy to drive. As you can plainly see from the problems I have experienced, the only repairs needed are routine maintenance required after many miles of driving and general wear and tear. My next goal is a little corrosion control and new paint for the body. I plan to keep this car for a very long time. When the doors fall off, then I may look into driving something different.

The car runs and drives like a new Cadillac. Truly, it is difficult to see where automobiles have improved enough over the past 35 years to justify the massive increase in costs off the lot. A new car with an equivalent engine and drive train would get around the same fuel economy and wear out much sooner.

I don't necessarily agree that a new car would wear out sooner, but could not agree with you more that the price of new cars has gotten to be absolutely ridiculous. It is because people go out and finance everything, just throwing caution to the wind. We are an "I have to have it now" society. I refuse to buy a new car on account of them being horrendously over priced, as you stated. I do not want to feed/enable the insanity. Good luck with your car.
