1979 Ford LTD 351 Windsor

Summary:

A fast car if worked on a little

Faults:

I had to change the transmission, as the transmission would leak transmission fluid.

I changed the starter, replaced the valve cover gaskets, I am going to have to fix a lot of rust that is on the floor pan, I had to replace the exhaust system, and I had to change the radiator.

It shifts hard, when I go from park to reverse or park to drive or any other shifting, it "kicks" and moves the car.

The rear differential needs to be overhauled.

General Comments:

The interior is very comfortable.

The car could be really fast if it had a new carburetor and if the engine was rebuild, it would haul.

The car drives like a boat.

It handles moderately well, could use some work though.

The miles per gallon could do better too.

1979 Ford LTD 5.0L 302 V8

Summary:

It is a great looking car with power to spare

Faults:

There have been many instances when the alternator has quit, but that is mainly because it was a refurbished alternator.

The carburetor was experimental when it was built, so it sometimes runs poorly.

Like many Ford vehicles, the U-Joint on the rear axle wears down, giving it a thump when the car shifts gears, or an annoying grinding noise (when it gets serious).

General Comments:

When this car is running properly, it is fast.

The transmission is great; it doesn't toggle between overdrive and drive on up-hills because there is no overdrive.

The year I own (1979) came with an Emerald green paint color, beige vinyl top and an all-beige interior with vinyl seats and wood-look accents. There is also plenty of chrome. It gives it a prestige look that still looks great today.

I own a 1979 Ford LTD. The car had the engine replaced before I bought it. It had the 302 but now has a 351 Windsor. The carburetor is the Variable Venturi, which runs really poorly. The summary of the car was pretty accurate. My car has a major rust problem on the driver-side floor pan. I also had to change the transmission. The rear differential needs to be rebuilt. Over all the car is great, but mine still needs work.

Hi-my name is Daman Y. from Incline Village, Nevada. I own a white 1979 Ford LTD four-door sedan with a 351 Windsor V-8 and a C-4 auto transmission. I bought the car for only $400 and it runs great for only having owned it for six months. The transmission does shift rough (due to the rear end u-joint problem) and the right carburetor makes all the difference in performance. Also, having the high-performance suspension/motor package is the best combo you can get with a car like this! My LTD has this package and it really shows it good!
