1991 Ford Mustang LX 5.0

Summary:

Ageless beauty, timeless class

Faults:

Starter, alternator, battery.

Bought it with a bad transmission.

General Comments:

I love this car. It's a joy to drive and Foxbody Mustangs are a modern classic. I am actually looking to add another Foxbody to my collection. I have a 2014 Mustang in addition to this one, and I rarely drive the 2014 because the Foxbody is so much fun to drive. These cars are easy to get power out of. They are so lightweight that even stock they're a blast. I can't ever see myself getting rid of this car.

1991 Ford Mustang Coupe LX 2.3

Summary:

A great, sporty, reliable car

Faults:

Clutch cable snapped.

Power locks work randomly.

General Comments:

Considering the condition of the car when I purchased it, it has done incredibly well. A car with 230 K's and no drivetrain issues is great.

The car is underpowered, but it goes better than a lot of other things if you know how to drive.

I love the handling. Even with bald tires, it doesn't plow very much going into corners. Steering is responsive, and braking is impressive.

Driver seat is worn, but no holes or rips in the fabric.

Lovely car, with nice fuel mileage, and some good looks.

1991 Ford Mustang LX 5.0L

Summary:

This car is Awesome

Faults:

This car is perfect. I would buy this car over any car in my budget, hands down. If anyone says anything bad about a Fox-body Mustang with a 5.0L V8, needs to stay away from my car. It will dust anything you have.

General Comments:

I beat a 1999 Camaro with a supercharger at a 1/4 mile. Everything except Flow master exhaust is stock on my car.

1991 Ford Mustang 5.0

Summary:

This is a reliable, powerful vehicle that does what I want it to do, when I want it done!

Faults:

Well, when I got the car, the driver's seat was a little on the broken side. Evidently the elderly gentleman who owned it before me was just a tad over weight, and with the seat being a general weak spot, couldn't take the pressure. Believe it or not, my friend spot welded the seat in 14 spots. I had a hard time finding the bracket for the seat back, so the old one was necessarily repaired.

Somebody cracked a metal part on my roof (it's a convertible), which was otherwise a brand new top. This part is cast aluminum and therefore cannot be welded, so I fixed it myself with an aluminum plate and now it works wonderfully!

The only other thing is that the seals all the way around the car probably need replacing. 15 years on soft rubber takes its toll.

General Comments:

I love my car. It's got a new paint job and a new top, and the engine is in perfect shape, both in the way it looks and drives. It looks like it just rolled off the show room floor.

The interior is in great shape too, other than a little fading on the cloth... no rips or tears or scuffs anywhere.

The only modification is the exhaust and it sounds wonderful.

I shipped it up from Spokane Washington to Anchorage Alaska, and I raced my dad on the way home from the port. I lost sight of my dad and the next thing I knew he passed me like I was standing still, and the race was ON. So at 70 MPH, I popped it into second gear and romped through them and at 120 in 4th I was at 4,000 rpm and still accelerating hard! My dad has a convertible turbo 900S Saab, and is nothing to scoff at on the highway, but even though he passed me with my guard off, I still caught up to him rather quickly ;)

I would very much like to see how fast it can go, but my tires do not have a high speed rating and would not fare well at 140-150 mph (the car red-lines at 6,000 rpm and I still had 5th gear, I know it will go fast).

I've only had my 5.0 a month, and am currently looking for mods that give me a little more power, not that I'm not very happy with it like it is, and better gas mileage.

I've also owned a Pontiac Fiero and a new VW Jetta, so I know what good handling is. Don't let people fool you, this car's cornering is halfway decent for what it is (a powerful muscle car), but you wouldn't want to match yourself up against something with german suspension in a set of switchbacks. I hear there are some suspension mods and chassy stiffeners that can be done.

I went on a trip from Spokane to Central Washington University, and the highway had a speed limit of 60mph. Obeying the speed limit the entire way (what can I say, with the top down you just don't have to drive as fast to have fun) I got 22 miles to the gallon. It gets good gas mileage when I treat it nice and bad when I feel like getting into a little trouble.

This isn't the fastest car on the road, but it will give most a run for their money. I love my car and I expect my convertible and I will be happy together for many years to come! I'm going into my Jr. year in College and I expect that there will be a few road trips with the top down this September!

"So at 70 MPH, I popped it into second gear"

Yea...right.

Unless you're "driving" some kind of jet propelled car, I highly doubt that you hit 70mph in first gear... or even second.

He downshifted is what he meant. Though I wouldn't advise it going highway speeds because there is a very high chance of blowing the tranny or over revving the engine doing that. But hey its your car.

Your car may seem like a muscle car torque wise, but its rather low on horsepower versus the newer sportier cars of today. Its top speed however is aided by the fact a lot of stangs came with 2:73 rear ends which is very high gearing.

My son had a 1989 Mustang 5.0. The only real problem he had with it was the heater core had to be replaced, talk about a job. The entire dash had to be taken apart. Other than that it was a wonderful car. He sold the car and has regretted it since. It was quite responsive and fun to drive. As far as down shifting to second gear we've done that plenty of times. It probably is hard on the engine however, we're talking about a 5.0 here. They are one of the most dependable engines built. If I could ever get my hands on another one at a reasonable price I would jump on it.

Most people do not realize that there is not another engine out there that is no longer a production piece, that still to this day after market companies are willing to spend millions of dollars a year to improve upon like the ford 5.0 engines. you will have no problem reaching what ever goal you have set to reach with your mustang by following tried and true method`s of recent years. GOOD LUCK AND BE SAFE!
