1993 Ford Probe GT 2.5L V6

Summary:

Fun to drive, great to own, expensive to keep

Faults:

Clutch has gone out. Replaced the distributor, twice. Currently needs valve cover gaskets, which is causing oil to leak onto the spark plug wires, and continuing to contribute to a vacuum leak. This however, is not uncommon to the 1993 Probe GT.

General Comments:

Despite it's problems, I wouldn't own another car. It's problems are what I describe as "Weekend-Fix Problems", which can be fixed over the weekend. It handles like NO other car I have ever driven. It gets great gas mileage, and spacious on the inside.

1993 Ford Probe GT 2.5L V6

Summary:

A nice looking car, but not very useful when its not going anywhere..

Faults:

Lemme see... a couple months after I got it, the rear calipers started seizing in cold weather.

Then, at about 80,000 miles, it overheated and stalled for no apparent reason.

At 90,000 miles the distributer and O2 sensors went out and it cost $634 in repairs.

About 2 weeks ago, it wouldn't start. Seems the fuel injectors are stuck open so the car floods out when the key is turned.

It recently began smoking, which the mechanic says is because of the fuel injectors pumping all that gas into the engine.

Now, its parked, waiting for a trip to the shop for a new water pump, timing belt, brakes, and fuel injector work, totally about $700 in repairs.

I don't know where the oil keeps going, there's no leak, its not burning oil, who knows?

Also, the paint seems to be fading away, but the car is almost 10 years old.

General Comments:

The Probe is a beautiful car, but its really lacking in integrity. The engine doesn't seem to have as much spirit as it should.

Because all the parts are made by Mazda, they're expensive and it seems like no parts store in the world carries them in stock.

Does the car puff black smoke? If it does that would more than likely be where your oil is going. This would be because what happens is the valve seals shrink after many miles and oil gets into the cylinder and burns with the fuel, which creates black smoke. Best of luck with that.

1993 Ford Probe GT 2.5L V6

Summary:

Nice, but could use some work..

Faults:

It looks like I've had all the same problems as other Probe owners. I had to have the distibuter replaced $$$, O2 sensors, the rear calipers stick (mine only in cold weather).

The car is really nice to look at but the body and the paint could really use some integrity. Very poor quality.

Also, anything, ANYTHING, you need to buy for a Probe seems like it costs a fortune. Just a headlight was ten bucks but the same headlight for any other car was four.

The cigarette lighter doesn't work either.

General Comments:

The car is fast and handles good.

Also, its a very very nice looking car but its just costly to fix.

My Probe GT has Premium Sound, a fact I only recently discovered while installing a Kenwood CD player to replace the factory unit. I have to say, if that was premium sound, I would really hate to hear the standard. Good thing I didn't buy it for the sound system. :)

1993 Ford Probe GT 2.5L V6

Summary:

A nice car but costly to drive and maintain

Faults:

One of the fog lights fell out the first week. I'm told you must replace entire front setup in order to have another one.

The brakes and rotors have been replaced several times.

The pieces of the body work don't fit together well at all. There are large gaps between the bumper and the fender on both sides.

The paint job isn't the greatest in the world. The mirrors and upper areas of paint are now a different color than previously.

The seats are discolored and I'm not sure what caused it.

The distributer and one crank sensor went out at 85000. That cost almost $700 and almost 3 weeks to fix.

Sometimes the car is slow to start and no one can seem to figure out why.

General Comments:

Overall, the Probe GT is a nice looking car. It has a nice body shape and the low profile tires and alloy wheels add class.

It has a lot of power, especially compared to my previously owned Escort.

The ride is, as with every Probe I've ridden in, very rough and every little bump is felt.

It seems like anything, part or accessory, for the Probe costs a fortune.

One of the worst things about the Probe is that the back seat is so small it might as well be nonexistant.

And, I forgot, the rear calipers stick during cold weather. Last winter I thought the rear end was on fire.
