1990 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3 dual plug 4 cylinder

A very reliable vehicle altogether

1990 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3 liter

Summary:

Tough little truck

Faults:

When I bought the truck, it had a small oil leak. But 400 dollars later and a new rear main seal, I can't find anything else to fix.

General Comments:

A very dependable truck.

Not a lot of power in the mountains. Wish it had more than 100 horsepower, and if I put my camper shell on, I have no power, but it's a great truck. It's like driving a go cart on steroids, which is a lot of fun.

The 2.3 liter engine is very strong as long as you take care of it. It's just a simple car that will give you no surprises or power when you need it. It's pretty much the scooter of trucks.

1990 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3 twin fire 4 cylinder

Summary:

Best vehicle I have ever driven and owned/owns

Faults:

Tires and fuel pump.

General Comments:

Not bad for a four cyl engine. The 2.3 is a strong working motor. I have towed 3 thousand pounds with it squatting real bad in the rear. I had 120 cinderblocks in the bed. I have pictures to prove it, and it moved those bricks like they weren't even there, although the steering was a little light ha ha.

Well the point is it's a strong dependable truck that you can't kill. Best truck for the money.

UPDATE! I inherited my dad's 1989 Ford Ranger regular cab long bed 2.9 V6 5spd. Just put another tranny in it. It has the typical oil and coolant leak from the heads and valve covers (no coolant in the oil, thanks to you know who). That truck is a strong runner. We bought it at 70k miles 9 years ago.

Currently as of 8/29/11, I have just rolled 168k on it, and it's still as powerful and graceful as the day we bought her. She's ugly but reliable. Best truck I have ever owned, and will continue to drive it till it dies, then onto a second motor :)

1990 Ford Ranger XLT Regular Cab Short Bed 2.3 liter four cylinder. dual plug

Summary:

This Ranger is a dependable, functional, gas-sipping truck that holds the road... even in the wind

Faults:

Anti-lock brakes inoperative.

Fuel gauge sending unit inoperative.

A.C. needs a recharge.

Rear anti-lock inoperative.

Bad O2 sensor.

Minor corrosion on & below both doors.

Rear (leaf) springs sag a bit.

General Comments:

Paid a grand for it last October. Came with a bed liner and matched white Leer topper. Bought it for a 2nd car. Very happy with it. All I've had to do so far is fix a tire leak.

With 180k +, it has definitely been around the block more than a few times. The dealer logo is from Savanna GA. The topper is from Hagerstown MD. The previous title was from Kodiak AK. It came from a military family - hey, so did I. Maybe that's why I like it so much.

I live in ND, and this engine starts when the temp is -10 & colder without being plugged in. Actually, you can't plug it in at all - there is no block heater. With the truck having been in AK for 12 years, that speaks volumes. It has never failed to start or needed to be jumped. I have taken it out of town in harsh winter weather for round trips of three to four hundred miles, and it has not left me stranded.

I am 6'5", and tip the scales at 275#. Even though I can't exactly 'stretch out', I am still relatively comfortable on road trips.

The 2.3 is no racing mill, but with the 5 speed it easily cruises at 75mph. The reg. cab & short bed make it a small truck, but it holds the road like a truck & feels like a truck should. I was pleasantly surprised at how it drives, yet I really like the maneuverability in close quarters.

In time, I will take care of the those minor issues. I plan on keeping it for quite a few years.

My overall thoughts?... probably the smartest $1000 I've ever spent.
