1993 Ford Ranger XLT 2X4 2.3L

Summary:

Best birthday present ever!!!

Faults:

My dash lights do not work.

When driving, when I proceed into fourth or fifth gear, the vehicle seems to lose some power.

Some alternator problems; just got a new one and it does not seem to charge.

General Comments:

Handles fairly well, and can get up and go. My uncle gave me this Ranger for my birthday, and I have been pleased with it so far. Although I need some advice?

I don't know if people can reply to these comments, but here is my question. My dash lights do not work. I had replaced the light bulbs and checked the fuses, and they still don't seem to work. Just wondering if anybody had any ideas what the problem might be. Thanks Guys.

You may need to take it to an auto electrician. If you've covered the basics then something else in the circuit is amiss. If ALL dash lights including the heater are not working, have a look at the lighting switch or if there is one, a lighting system relay. The wire that goes to the gauges may have become frayed or unsoldered.

I don't know if this helps you or not, but my 97 Altima's dash lights were doing the same thing. The alternator went one day, and when I replaced it, the dash lights worked.. If you changed the alternator and you're still not holding a charge, that usually means it's the battery.

1993 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0

Summary:

Fair at best, the tranny is a dog

Faults:

Original transmission wasted by my late brother letting fluid leak from the rear tail-shaft seal. I inherited it, replaced the A4LD transmission and drove it for two years. Just had to have THAT transmission rebuilt. That was a $1620.00 ARG!

Seat on driver's side sagged badly on the outside edge, making you sit with twisted (tilted) hips. Replaced them with BOMZ Racing seats. Had to sledge-hammer them to make them comfortable, they were too restrictive.

Headliner sagged flapping on top of my head. I removed the liner and stitched it back up by hand, and reinstalled it.

General Comments:

The 3.0 is lacking power. GM's 3.0 and 3.1 were much more responsive.

The A4LD transmission is a weak and poorly designed unit in my opinion.

It does handle well for a truck.

The ride was car-like until I put Gabriel Gas Charged Shocks on it. Now much stiffer. I wish I hadn't.

Wish it was an extended cab, not much room for a suitcase on trips. If you're debating it yourself, GET THE EXTENDED CAB!

1993 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3 4 cylinder

Summary:

Excellent daily driver, one of the best purchases I've ever made

Faults:

Slave cylinder @ 110000.

Heater core @ 113000.

General Comments:

Awesome vehicle, extremely reliable.

Any bigger than me and the cab may be uncomfortable (I'm 6'1, 175lbs.)

Not crazy about the interior looks, but it has held up very well despite hot sunny summer days in the south.

My only complain is gas mileage, expected a little better for a 4-cyl (gets 25 - 27 mpg).

Never had to have an alignment, if tires are rotated in a reasonable amount of time they wear perfectly even. Put 95,000 miles on the last set!

Won't make the mistake of getting rid of this truck, my kids may end up learning to drive on it.

1993 Ford Ranger XLT SuperCab 4.0L V6

Summary:

I am proud to own a vehicle that is considered Ford Tough

Faults:

The power/ground supply connections went bad before the first battery change.

Went through two starters in 13 years.

Replaced the transmission in the 7th year.

A/C and power windows went out in the 8th year.

The gas tank began leaking at the seam in the 9th year. Drove it with a half tank of gas for the next few years.

Blew a head gasket in the 12th year.

General Comments:

Breakdowns were usually wear items: tires, battery or starter. This truck has never left me stranded with major mechanical problems.

Good ride and gas mileage.

Interior comfort started out great but deteriorated over time.

Changed oil often but didn't service vehicle regularly which is all the more impressive for getting 334,000 miles out of her.

I am most impressed with the 4.0L V6 engine, this little motor does not quit.

I feel like I got more out of this truck than I expected and it still looks good.
