A Wheeling Beast

Faults:

The first thing that went wrong with it was the starter cable went out at about 109800. The interior is in mint condition except for the back sliding window, it leaks a little in the car wash (some weather sealant should fix that up).

General Comments:

It has been a great truck for the most part, so far. I plan to get a 3 inch body lift and a 4 inch suspension lift. I'm in the process of getting some 33" BFG Mud Terrains. It still runs start, and even with 31" inch tires it can lay a nice patch of rubber. It has a lot of low end torque, and excellent power for a compact truck.

Summary:

Remarkable bargain, the cost of the truck worked out to be.05 cents a mile

Faults:

At approx. 180,000 the clutch had to be replaced.

At 275,000 we had to replace the transmission.

Now at 350,000 we are replacing the a/c clutch.

Normal brake pad replacement.

General Comments:

The Ranger with the V-6 4.0 cannot be beat, very little repair. You expect maintenance with any truck, but this truck has been remarkable. The larger engine has good power, and never had trouble pulling a load.

1993 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3L 4 cylinder

Summary:

This is great truck built truly Ford tough

Faults:

The only problems that I have ever had with this truck is that it threw a timing belt at 136,000 miles. The headlight switch also has gone out twice, but it was no big deal and was a cheap fix.

General Comments:

I have learned to love my truck even with its not so beefy 2.3L engine witch only generates 112hp and 135lbs of torque. Even with that lack of power it is still a blast to drive. Its small 4cyl engine has a very nice sound when you have to put the pedal down.

It is incredibly reliable, even in cold weather I have never had a problem with getting it to fire up. I have had no major problems even after 150,000 miles it still runs like it was new.

It has some pretty comfortable bucket seats too. The only major draw back is that there is really only seating for 2 comfortable. The small folding seats in the back are useless, unless you are 5 or 6 years old. It is also very hard to sit there up front since it has bucket seats instead of a bench seat.

But by far this truck is a very great value and I would gladly buy another Ford when I get my next car.

Power Ranger

Faults:

After a year I had to replace the muffler, valve cover gaskets, breaks and upper and lower front ball joints. This is what happens when you buy it used and abused. The next problem I have was a bad case of bad mechanics. When they replaced the motor mounts it caused a leak in the transmission. I have to add a quart of fluid ever 2 weeks after they worked on it.

At 50,000 miles I had to replace the starter and battery. At present (67,000 miles) I just replaced spark plugs and wires. Every time I start the engine it smokes a lot! When I stop at a red light the engine starts to run rough. Otherwise I like the truck. 4 wheeling is awesome in the winter time. I carried all the lumber and stone when I built my 20'x20' deck on the house.

General Comments:

The big V6 4.0L provides enough horsepower, POWER RANGER!!!

4X4 is Awesome in the snow.

Cheap and low cost to operate.

Summary:

I wish this truck would wear out, (so I can justifly buying a new one)

Faults:

I had to change the battery once.

General Comments:

This is a great truck, as 4x4's go. (even the front tires don't wear out on the edges, unheard of on 4 wheel drive trucks) This Ranger has served me faithfully.

1993 Ford Ranger XLT 2.3L

Summary:

The vehicle of choice for someone who values money

Faults:

At 75,000mi I replaced the rear pinion crush sleeve. Shift quality was a little too slushy for my taste. Then again, most of this was due to overly rough shifting. I often achieved 3rd gear rubber with this truck.

At 170,000mi, I replaced the rear pinion crush sleeve again. Again, it was probably just fine, but I could tell that slack was developing.

At 200,000mi I had to rebuild the alternator. This may be due to poor build quality, or the 500W audio system. Seriously, this mild repair was still cheaper than a 2 battery system.

General Comments:

The 1993 Ranger I owned exceeded my expectations immensely. In 7 years of ownership, it had only one mechanical failure: an alternator.

The experiences that I have had with this truck may not be typical. I always changed the oil and filter every 3,000mi.

Though I always maintained the truck well, I wasn't as kind with driving it. I enjoyed getting "3rd gear rubber" with it on a regular basis.

In giving this review, I do warn people about selling their Rangers for sporty cars. Don't do it! I regret my choice back in 2000 to get a sleek car. It's not built to last.
