Faults:

Transmission went out at about 85,000 miles (was under extended warranty).

Thermostat replaced at 115,000.

Brakes replaced at 125,000 and 182,000.

Power window motor went out 150,000.

The reclining lever on the driver's seat broke, so the seat does not stay up very well.

General Comments:

I took terrible care of this car for the last 7 years, just kind of waiting for it to die so I could get a new one, and it never has.

I rarely changed the oil, never got tune ups, basically did nothing in the way of maintenance, but it kept starting and running fine.

It developed its share of nuances (such as being hard to get in gear during spring when the weather changed), but was always drivable.

If I had kept better care of the truck, it would be doing even better than it is now.

Faults:

Well I purchased the car used a few weeks ago, and immediately had to go on a long drive. A car trip that should have taken 2 days, took 4. The truck died on me 3 different times. I have changed the crank sensor on it 3 times in 2 weeks. 2 times have been done in a shop, and the last time I did it myself because I was tired of paying for it.

Before I bought it, it was very smooth and looked great for being a '94, but as with all used vehicles, there is no guarantee; just thought it would last more than a week...

Faults:

200,000 miles. Bogging at full throttle, rough idle, loss of power of big hills.

Replaced: EGR valve, EGR sensor, EGR solenoid, fuel filter, plugs, wires, O2 sensors and it ran a little better.

Cleaned the MAF sensor, it ran better than it ever has in the 6 years I have had it. It runs like new!

Faults:

Thermostat just replaced at 223,500kms.

General Comments:

I have only owned the truck for a short time, so the thermostat was the only maintenance I've done to it so far. Besides oil changes that is.

I have the 1994 Ranger, regular cab long box, with the 2.3 4cyl and 5 speed transmission 2 wheel drive. So far I love the truck. The owner I bought it from had just changed the clutch, so shifting is better than a brand new Cadillac!

The truck drives very nicely and runs fairly well for the kms on it. I find it is using a little more fuel than I remember my previous Tempo's with the same motor, but that could be because it's probably due for a tune-up.

The infamous Ranger rust problem was taken care of just before winter with a complete body and paint job, however the rust is already slowly coming back. I am about to swap out the headlight lenses with aftermarket ones because of the infamous Ford fogging lenses issue that several of Ford's vehicles suffer from.

I live in Winnipeg Manitoba, where in the winter we see several days between -25 and -45, and this truck, even though it does not have a block heater installed (I bought the truck in Southern Ontario), it ALWAYS starts no matter how cold it is or how long it sits. Just recently it sat for a full month out in a cold Winnipeg winter, and when I got home, I went directly to the truck and fired it up on a dime! Surprised the heck out of me.

So with the reliability of this truck, the availability of cheap parts when needed, and the awesome cheap insurance (just over $600 a year with $200 deductible and 2 million liability), I don't see myself replacing this truck with anything else anytime soon.
