1995 Ford Ranger XL 2.3

Summary:

Great first truck, awesome reliability

Faults:

At 92000 miles I replaced the clutch Assembly, and both motor mounts. "That was really hard."

The windshield wipers come on whenever they want, and don't come on when you need them.

The dome light has never worked right since we've had it.

The dome light stays lit the whole time, But the dimmer switch works fine. It's like it was wired straight to the battery. "Good thing we have a mag light flashlight."

The trim that holds the cigarette lighter broke and the lighter fell inside the dash.

The trip odometer reset button doesn't reset anymore.

General Comments:

The truck overall is really reliable.

We did put bigger tires and rims on it.

It pulls trailers awesome.

The cab is only big enough for two people.

The 4 spark plugs on the driver side are hard to change.

The problem you have with the dome light not working could be dirty contacts like on mine I just sprayed some WD-40 in the door latch and the stud that holds the door shut on both doors and now it works fine..

I have had almost the exact same problems described above:

Replaced the clutch package (master and slave seals included) at around 136,000 miles.

The windshield fluid dispenser no longer works.

The trim that holds the cigarette lighter broke and the lighter fell inside the dash.

The trip odometer reset button doesn't reset anymore, nor have I put a mile on the truck in about 2,000 miles.

My truck was a crash rebuild (SALVAGED) but the probles are so similar it's creepy.

1995 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 Liter

Summary:

A great bargain for a truck

Faults:

Seats and center console have worn a little.

General Comments:

This truck is peppy, I got it up to 75 in no problem.

The interior is roomy and comfortable.

The truck is well lit inside and out.

The back seat is a little small, but I guess you wouldn't get a full bench back seat in a mid-sized truck.

1995 Ford Ranger XL 4.0 Liter

Summary:

This is a blast to drive with lots of power, go race some Mustangs and see!!

Faults:

I've change the EGR Valve ($87) out cause the Service Engine Soon light came on and that's what the On-board Diagnostic computer said to do to fix it. That didn't fix it so I changed it again after 2 months cause it was still under warranty. I is a PITA to change, and the second time didn't help either. Changed the fuel filter ($14) and that fixed it. My advise; start with cheapest repair items it could be and work your way up, I'm sure my EGR Valve was just find and it was the fuel filter. I'm about to change the spark plugs and wires, which are still original. Change your oil every 3000 miles religious like and your engine will last a long time. The Ford battery died around 45,000 miles and I got the biggest battery that Wal-mart sold that would physically fit to replace it cause I typically like to run other gadgets off the battery.

General Comments:

I bought this truck because it was a bargain. I paid $4200 for a 2 year old truck with 22,000 miles on it that had been garage kept and the guy wanted room to put his Buick in the garage. At the time I think it Blue booked for around $9500, so I practically stole it. All the other trucks I looked at had leaking seals and rough running engines cause people wouldn't change their oil properly. This is an amazing truck. It was originally sent to Brazil as a test vehicle in 1995, and the 4.0 Liter engine didn't pass the emissions test like the 2.3 Liter did so they sent it back to the US. This truck has amazing power, I can spin the tires all the way into 3rd gear. It handles great and from my experience, I would buy another light truck again. Buy the widest tires you can get.

A semi-auto tranny? Rangers of the time came with either an A4LD automatic or the Mazda 5 speed.
