2003 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0L

Summary:

Great compact truck

Faults:

The only problem I have had with the Ranger was the slave cylinder. It started leaking clutch fluid, but luckily I needed a new clutch anyway, so it wasn't a big deal.

General Comments:

The Ranger has been a great truck for me. It's not overly powerful, but it can handle many things. It always starts and gets you where you need to go comfortably.

2003 Ford Ranger Edge 3.0 V6

Summary:

Fun-Fun-Fun!! Good Redneck Fun!

Faults:

No problems so far. Purchased with just under 21K. It did need new front brakes.

General Comments:

I really like my 2003 Ford Ranger Edge. Purchased it from a dealer's used car selection. If you're looking for quick acceleration and sports car performance, this vehicle is not for you, however you can accelerate onto a freeway entrance and pass with authority when needed.

The transmission is very quick and responsive.

Power steering is good.

A/C keeps you nice and cool.

6-Speaker w/6-CD Changer.. sound is not bad at all.

They call this a "compact pickup" It may not be an F-150, but it's very comfortable, has a good ride, is roomy and can haul a considerable amount of stuff in its 6-foot bed.

2003 Ford Ranger 4.0L EXT CAB SOHC

Summary:

Great truck, and good value

General Comments:

Nothing has gone wrong so far. I just purchased this truck. It's being used on a daily basis as I am a student away from home.

I always wanted to purchased a Ford Ranger, so recently I have and so far I have absolutely no regrets. I was nervous about the gas mileage after reading reviews on here. But remember people, you're driving a truck so it is to be expected. I'm actually happy with my gas mileage and was extremely impressed.

I was looking at the 3.0L models and found a 4.0L in the same price range. I'm glad I went with the 4.0L because it has a good amount of power, considering the size of the truck.

This is my first time driving a standard as well, and I must say, I learned with ease.

Unfortunately, I haven't owned this truck longer. I will update this review later on down the road with more information.

2003 Ford Ranger XLT

Faults:

The Gas Pedal TORE loose from the fire wall.

The truck has 255,000 miles on it, and it has not been ABUSED, but has been driven.

Looking at the shape of the pedal assembly, it is slightly less than a "C" shape, with the top of the "C" being connected to the Accelerator cable, and the bottom of the "c" being where the foot pushes, and the middle of the "bend" being where the bracket (that is spot welded to the fire-wall) is supporting the pedal assembly.

Initially, the pedal shifted to the left (the inboard side of the "C"), and I lost power. If I pushed the pedal to the right, I was able to continue. BUT, Before I was able to maneuvere through HOUSTON traffic, the pedal fell off, and I lost all power.

I did get to the side of the road without being KILLED, and identified the problem of the torn medal on the bracket, attached to the gas pedal in my hand.

I got to a FORD dealer, (by tying a rope to the accelerator cable), and they looked cross-eyed at me and exclaimed that they had never seen that.

[The business card of the "Collision Director" 's, was only SLIGHTLY thinner than the piece of fire-wall still attached to the Pedal's bracket.]

I am an Engineer, and have rebuilt more engines than I can count, and can understand the reason for this failure, and can recognize that it is NOT an isolated problem.

I call foul. How can you be an engineer who has "rebuilt more engines than I can count," driven this truck for 255K miles, and not know what engine and transmission are in it?

I used a piece of bailing wire to limp my truck home... it was an easy fix.

My pedal fell off... I pulled over to the side of the road, put bailing wire (with a screw driver handle) limped her home, though shifting wasn't too smooth.

A few bolts later I haven't had a problem one out of her... but mine only has 200k miles.
