1987 Ford Taurus GL

Summary:

The car is Garbage

Faults:

The car idled way to high so I could not pass emissions without major repairs.

The starter is a constant problem.

Constant electrical problems since I have had it.

The car burns oil which makes it smoke at red lights.

General Comments:

The car is comfortable and although it is an old car it should work better than this, electrical problems are very expensive and that is a constant with this car.

The starter is always a problem when it fails to catch fire. I walk to the car everyday afraid it will not start up. Not good for a college student like myself.

It is fairly comfortable inside, but if you are like me you do not know much about cars. I have never spent so much time under a hood in my life.

1987 Ford Taurus

Summary:

Don't buy used, please!!!

Faults:

Brakes.

CPU @ $500.

Thermostat.

Heater hoses.

Radiator!

Transimission once (good for a Taurus, changed the fluid regularly - 30,000 miles).

Motor mounts.

CV joints.

A/C compressor. A/C constantly leaks, after numerous O-ring changes.

Power steering and oil leaks.

The cooling system is trash, I can't keep water or anti-freeze in the car. Water pump.

Rusty as all get out.

General Comments:

I like it when it runs. Which means I like it about 50% of the time.

1987 Ford Taurus GL 2.5 liter

Faults:

Brakes wear quickly, constant electrical problems, steering column locked up twice - I have had this car two years and have towed it six times. Compared to the other 8 cars I have owned, this is a piece of wheat.

147,000mi. Previous owners may have not taken good care of it. Expensive to repair and service. Even the fan belt is $60 from the dealer. Just for the part.

Good luck. Don't buy a Ford. This one and the Tempo were crap. I had a Fiesta which was OK.

1987 Ford Taurus GL Wagon 3.0

Faults:

Brakes and rotors many, many times.

Heater core.

Radiator three times.

Just replaced head gaskets which apparently have been leaking coolant for years. Repair manual says design flaw.

Water pump.

Ignition module.

All my friends replaced their trannys very early on. One blew an engine at 39,000 miles.

General Comments:

I do like the way the car drives, when it's running OK. Can't afford to sell because it is worthless. Drives better than it runs. If I weren't a good mechanic the car would have disappeared long, long ago. I genuinely feel sorry for anyone I see driving a Taurus. Don't fall for Ford's hype, the car is junk, built and designed with inferior materials and design flaws.

I happen to like my 1987 Taurus with 164,000 miles on it. The only thing that I replaced was wear out parts: brakes, tires, tune up parts. I never had to have any major work done yet.

On trips if I keep the speed about 62-65, I get about 40 to 43 miles to the gallon without the air on. With the air on I get about 35-37 miles to the gallon. I change the oil every 3000 miles and the tranny every 12000 miles.

I wrote the review for the LX Wagon, I feel your pain. Cheap FORD replacement parts mean nothing when you're ALWAYS replacing them. Mine was a demo. The car presently sits in the yard awaiting the touch of God to revive it... we gave up!!

Good luck with it.

I rather enjoy my '87 taurus sedan.

Of course, it's not like I have a choice, because it's the only car available to me at this time (because of my innate ability as a 19 year old to never make enough money to do anything worthwhile).

It's a decent drive, and while I did replace quite a few minor parts when I first got it (4 months ago, from a man who rarely if ever drove it, or looked at it for that matter), right now it seems as though it'll be running fine for at least a few more months, which should be long enough for me to both earn money for and buy a car.

7/10, would drive again.
