1991 Ford Taurus LX 3.0L V6

Summary:

Not too shabby once you get them working

Faults:

Transmission never quite worked right. We ended up with a completely different re-built one.

Water pump failed.

Coin tray doesn't push in all the way.

General Comments:

Well, this is a nice car for what it is. It's a passenger car, and that's what it's designed for. If/when you finally get the transmission working correctly, it's not really that bad of a car to drive. There is a lot of money required to get one of these working, generally, so I wouldn't pick one of these older models up.

The car performs decent enough. I have a feeling that if the car were lighter, lower and had even slightly wider tires it would perform wonderfully. The A/C does take a noteable bit from the engine however. So if I'm in a big hurry, I just stick it on vent until I get up to speed. If you want it to go though, take it OUT of overdrive. Overdrive seems to make the transmission lazy, but you shouldn't take the car much over 60mph if you're not in overdrive.

The interior is very nice. It's roomy, and I can fit 5 full-grown people fairly well. The mileage isn't too bad. You can generally go about 225 miles on a tank, and filling it is usually about $17-$19 in the neighborhood of 1.50 a gallon.

If you're looking for a SPORTY car, go buy the SHO type model or another model/make. If you're looking for a very practical car, go get one of these.

1991 Ford Taurus LX 3.0L V6

Faults:

- Rust all over.

- Head gaskets.

- Rebuilt transmission.

General Comments:

This was previously my fathers car, and as you can see, he put a very low amount of mileage on it..

As I can recall, the performance was a lot better when he first had it.

I wouldn't buy a Taurus from the years 89-91, unless it is an SHO (Manual transmission, and Yamaha-made engine). They seemed to improve after this, so I guess Ford is learning.

The Radio did not last just like on the 1989 Ford.

1991 Ford Taurus GL 3.8L V-6

Faults:

I thought the transmission was bad, but it just happened to be a speed sensor. The cost was about $250. I've had to replace the inner tie-rod on the passenger side, cost $18.50. I also had to put a new power steering pump on.

General Comments:

All in all, this car has been reliable, and it has plenty of pep with its 3.8L.

The car has 126K miles on it and still doesn't use any oil between oil changes.

My only complaint with this car is the paint job, as with other Taurus's the paint is fading.

1991 Ford Taurus Station Wagon V6

Faults:

You name it...radiator cracked (made of plastic) blew a head, overheated constantly, whole air conditioning system, alignment (and spot welds have to be knocked out to fix it) windshield broke after hitting a fly on it (I'm not kidding!)

General Comments:

I have never hated a car so much. I would rather have a bus pass than a free Ford any day. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

1991 Ford Taurus SHO 3.0 liter V-6

Faults:

Rear Brake Rotors, Clutch, Oil Loss.

General Comments:

This car is incredible. 225 hp , 220 lbs. torque quarter mile 15.2 . This is a 4 door sedan that can smoke a stock Mustang GT. The five speed is great. It is the ultimate sleeper. I probably would have never had problems with it if I didn't drive it so hard. I recommend this to anyone. The new ones are nice too, and I would get one if they had a five speed.

Very fast.

FYI 15.2 in 1/4 mile will not smoke a stock Mustang GT, unless it is a auto GT Convertible running on 7 cylinders. I had a 92 SHO, it was quick (when it was running) but I wouldn't buy another one. Don't buy a SHO unless you have a lot of money in the bank for the repairs that will come.
