1993 Ford Taurus GL 3.0 V6

Summary:

Sweet car

Faults:

Replaced front motor mount, replaced air sensor twice, turn discs whenever I do the brakes, otherwise routine maintenance.

General Comments:

I bought new for $13,500, but all round performance excellent, about 28mpg, although the 3.0 is too small for high mountain passes with more than two people - result, engine overheats.

Engine overheats on above 85 F with the air conditioning on above 5000 ft elevation.

Burning premium fixes engine overheat.

The 93 had new suspension design, corners like a cat.

Comfortable on long drives, big trunk.

A used 93 with 100K goes for $3500 (2001).

1993 Ford Taurus GL 3.0 V6

Summary:

Cheap, reliable, all around good car

Faults:

Practically nothing has gone wrong with this car.

Just recently had some gasket work done.

Fixed the oil pan, valve cover and tranny gasket.

Had all the recalls done on it and it has been problem free for the entire time we've had it.

I think the worst thing that needs to be done to it right now is it needs a tune up, plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

General Comments:

A great family sedan. Good looking, reliable, and probably the cheapest workhorse that's comfortable I've ever driven. A great car.

1993 Ford Taurus XL 3.8

Summary:

I wish I would never have bought the car

Faults:

A/C unit went out.

Transmission (twice).

Struts.

Starter.

Car sometimes accelerates on its own.

Motor mount broke.

Dash light went out.

General Comments:

I bought an extended warranty with the car. That was the best purchase I have ever made. This car has given me so many headaches. I wouldn't suggest anyone buy a Taurus unless you enjoy hanging out at the dealership while your car is getting fixed.

I had bought my 94 LX in Jan 1999 with 42000 miles on it. A little over a year later I noticed a delayed shifting into 1st gear at stops which got worse as the car warmed up. It would get stuck in neutral briefly at stops before engaging into gear. Pretty dangerous at intersections.

I found a national Transmission shop that told me over the phone what the problem was. They had done so many of these Ford transmissions already, they could tell just by talking to me.

These Ford transmissions should have been recalled. A little worrisome is the fact that Ford had known about the common transmission problems for years, but continued making them anyways.

Another problem I found out was that rebuilt Ford transmissions frequently broke again because the same faulty part was included in the rebuild.

I feel for you. I wasn't expecting to have to rebuild my transmission on a Ford with such low mileage, especially since the car was well maintained before and after I bought it.

This is typical of Ford. I had a Taurus wagon that was nothing but trouble. Head gaskets, body rust, A/C, transmission, etc. I learned once and that's all it took to cure me.

Mine had the same transmission problem. Banged going into 1st gear when stopping. Slipped when shifting to high on a hill. The head gaskets blew at 35,000 miles (3.8L engine). They knew about that one to.

Ford has a reputation for building junk. They put all their money into electric windows and marketing and nothing into design and manufacturing.

They really don't fix anything until they get sued. Then they blame the consumer and make excuses.

Nobody buys a Ford because they expect it to work. They buy it because it's cheap!

We bought a 1993 Ford Taurus Wagon with a 3.8 L engine. It had all the options available and then some. It was a locally purchase vehicle. We loved the little car for 8 months, then without warning, the transmission started to slip. I had it analyzed and they could find nothing wrong except low fluid. After fill up and on the hoist it worked flawlessly. However, 50+ miles on a back road, it failed completely. The only transmissions I can find are rebuilt and only have a 1 year warranty. I would never buy this car again despite its economy that is excellent as is its performance.
