1993 Ford Taurus SHO 3.0 Yamaha
Summary:
The SHO is a stealthy, power-full, family sedan
Faults:
At around 99k miles the DIS went, checked out the local junkyard got one for $20 replaced it myself and went on.
At 110k I had the top 60k service done because of oil leaking into the plug wells, changed the plugs and wires as well.
At 115k the right half shaft went.
At 119k The water pump began leaking so I went ahead and had the pump replaced along with the rest of lower 60k service including the camshaft position sensor and crankshaft position sensor.
General Comments:
This car is a beast, It handles great for a larger car and catches a lot of positive and negative attention. I have had my car keyed in so many random places its ridiculous.
The 3.0 Yamaha they put in these mated to the 5 speed manual turns this calm car into a beast. The engine is high revving and SCREAMS when taking hard launches while the exhaust stays quiet.
For reliability, basically any part of this Yamaha motor that was ford derived will break. The engine it self is bulletproof and will stand up to abuse, the car has never left me stranded and I have put it through its paces with 6 and 7 hour road trips.
This car easily beats 5.0 mustangs of the current time period. And is fun to spank ricers with.
Despite being a FWD heavy car I've found that it does not handle well in the snow, the tires easily spin and the rear end is lighter than the rest and I have lost the rear end in snow with some of the best all season tires. But I have never had to get snow tires even considering I live in upstate New York.
The car is roomy, it can easily fit 5 people and the car is very comfy with leather and power adjustable seats.
Don't be scared by the maintenance I had to perform in just 30k miles, I just happened to purchase the car around the time these parts life span end. The car is great and Its been nearly 11 months of driving and I'll I had to do is replace the oil and filter!
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

I'm not sure I get this comment, "has many features one would not expect from a car this old"
1992 is not all THAT long ago, we are not talking about a car from the early 1900's but one from the early 1990's. Cars from the '90s have just about the same technology as what is used in cars today.
Airbags, ABS, automatic climate control A/C, power everything, all this was not invented yesterday, and is not only available in brand new cars.
And just because a car is around 15 years old, it does not mean that the options just being disappearing as the car ages. So I'm not sure why you wouldn't expect a car to have good option just because it is a little older than new.
