1998 Ford Taurus SHO 3.4 V8

Summary:

Wonderful

Faults:

There have been no problems with this vehicle. OEM brakes lasted 52,000, struts and shocks are still original and in great condition. No electrical or mechanical issues other than normal maintenance. Driver's seat got a slight tear early, but dealer replaced free of charge.

General Comments:

This is by far the best overall car I have ever owned, and I've owned 16 cars in my life. Quiet, smooth, and plenty of performance for a family sedan. If anyone complains that it doesn't have the power of comparible family sedans from other manufacturers, they are biased. I have held my own against every other family sedan in this class. So to those complainers, grow up. While the gas mileage is not what I would have liked, it is what should be expected by a V8. No other family sedan in this class are offered with V8's.

1998 Ford Taurus SE DOHC 24 Valve 3.0

Summary:

This car is alright..

Faults:

The tranny slips in and out of gears. Typical for the tranny to wear out on that amount of mileage. Ford stuck with the same design back when they first built the taurus.

General Comments:

The DOHC 24 Valve V6 Duratec Engine has a lot of get up and go. But, I think that the tranny is so warn that it can't keep up with how much power the engine is putting out. Some days it runs fine and I have no problems. It usually acts up when it is really hot and humid out. When I'm driving on the highway. I get no response, and I would have too shift it manually to get it back into gear. When I drive in the city it will slam into gears sometimes.

I had a 1998 Taurus now for 5 years. When I got it there were 65,000 miles on it. It now has 135,000 and is going strong, though I do feel some transmission slippage. From what I understand that is common with the Taurus. (My previous car was a 1994 Taurus and when I had to get rid of it, there were close to 190,000 miles on the clock.) These things are built to last if you care for them.

1998 Ford Taurus SE 3.8

Summary:

A great dependable car

Faults:

The only problem I had was it wouldn't slow down when I let my foot off the gas.

General Comments:

This car was the best and most reliable car I have owned.

It had low maintenance and never had to have work done on it for the 6 years I owned it.

The only reason I don't have it now is because it was stolen two weeks ago.

1998 Ford Taurus SE 3.0 V6

Summary:

Money pit, don't buy one

Faults:

Transmission started acting funny (not shifting, slipping, etc) at 40000 miles.

Interior lights would not turn off when the doors were closed beginning at 50000 miles.

Right rear tail light would fill with water and bulb would burn out whenever it rained starting at 55000 miles.

Went through four sets of rear brake pads and two sets of front brake pads in the 40 thousand miles I owned it. Rear calipers where rebuilt twice during that time.

Intermittent short in radio light.

General Comments:

Comfortable car for long trips and rode fairly quietly. Roomy inside and nice big trunk.

It would have been a great car if not for all the mechanical and electrical problems I experienced.

This was my father-in-law's company car and it came with the police package. It had the bigger four wheel disk brakes, the stiffer suspension, and the larger alternator.
