1999 Ford Taurus GL Sedan V6

Summary:

Feed and diaper her, and she will put you in a good retirement home

Faults:

I had to replace three or four door seals, two transaxle seals, radiator hose seems to go every 50-60 thousand miles, and a few bulbs. I am on the fourth or fifth battery, and on the fifth set of tires. I had to replace the trunk and hood switches, and my key fob buttons never worked from the start.

General Comments:

Taurus is somewhat slow for my tastes.

Great reliability, just regular wear and tear!

Very, very comfortable.

Climate control easy to control.

Trunk is small and despise the trunk hinges.

Drinks oil very slowly.

Gas mileage was about 34 MPG when new, now down to 25 MPG, almost all highway models.

I think the car is somewhat ugly, but it it is okay.

Headlight illumination NEEDS to improve!

Wow, it's a miracle that your Taurus has gone over 300k. I guess if you baby it the way you seem to it will last! New headlight lenses off eBay should help your illumination problem. My old Mercury Cougar had a quirky remote issue as well. The panic button never worked on either remote, but the other buttons always did. Weird.

You have gone through 5 sets of tires in 35K miles?? Try driving it!!! The seals that are leaking on your car are made of RUBBER like the tires, it's called DRY ROT!!!

1999 Ford Taurus SE 3.0 Vulcan

Summary:

A reasonable used car for the money.

Faults:

My biggest complaint is brake rotors warping and the fact that they can't be turned down. You have to by new rotors every time.

The previous owners didn't maintain the coolant. It was the original stuff, probably due to its low mileage (33,000) I took it in for a flush and fill and they had to do it twice, with the advise to bring it in again in four months to clean it again.

The amazing thing is it doesn't overheat and the heater still works, for now at least.

General Comments:

The 1999 Taurus wagon will haul all kinds of stuff which makes it a favorite of my wife. We've put 15,000 miles on it in 10 months with no issues, not bad for a $5,500 used car.

The ride is firm with reasonably comfortable seats and interior that has held up well.

The paint and wheels still look very good. I've always preferred the wagon look to the sedan.

The 3.0 Vulcan motor, while lower in power compared to the cammer motor, is very tough. My 1986 Sable wagon went 178,000 miles with one replaced water pump and one distributor unit. The engine still ran quiet with no oil consumption.

Yes, it went through a transmission rebuild along with half-shaft rebuilds and a front bushing replacement.

The 4 speed AOD is very smooth with 21 mpg city and 28 highway if you keep it at 65 mph.

1999 Ford Taurus SE 3.0 12V

Summary:

Great dependable vehicle

Faults:

Only 2 problems in 9 years:

Rear struts @ 30k, but covered by warranty.

Left side tie rod at 55k caused a squeak or groan while turning at low speeds.

Changed the oil and antifreeze as required, and have had no problems.

General Comments:

Great reliability!

Very quiet and firm handling.

I rent a lot of new intermediate size vehicles like the Toyota Corolla on business travel, and always look forward to getting back into my full size Taurus. Even at 9 years old it's still better handling, smoother and more responsive than most new mid sized cars, and yes, that includes Toyota, Mazda, and Honda!

1999 Ford Taurus SE 3.0L Duratec V6

Summary:

Crap

Faults:

To those of you who are having trouble with heat in the Taurus...beware! I had my thermostat replaced twice and had a full system flush (around $600 by the time everything was done).

I decided since no one could pinpoint the problem, I would just deal with freezing during the winter. The other day while driving, my temperature gage dropped to zero and the car chugged and then died. I got out and saw white smoke coming out of the exhaust and under the hood, with coolant spraying everywhere. Turns out my car overheated (with NO indication on my temperature gauge!!!) and blew the head gasket. It also warped the cylinder heads and the car is toast. There was a puddle of coolant the size of a couch under my car, so there obviously was plenty of coolant in it. The dealership has no idea why it overheated and even less idea why the temperature gage showed nothing, but they said it's common in the Taurus.

I have 98,000 miles on this car and I've maintained it well.

HOWEVER, I have had all the classic Taurus problems:

No heat.

Interior light on randomly.

Ball joints and rotors replaced.

Several new thermostats.

Defective rear disc brakes.

Heater core is bad.

In addition, I've had a litany of other fun problems:

Huge hole in my fuel line led to having to replace the fuel filter, fuel line, and gas tank.

Had to replace the radiator coolant well at 80,000 miles.

EGR valve backflow problem reading on my computer... replaced EGR valve and light would not go off... now "check engine" light is always on and EGR backflow code always shows on computer.

Heater line had to be replaced at 50,000 miles- very expensive, difficult repair and the part was hard to find.

Alternator replaced at 70,000 miles.. during this repair, a pulley wheel on another part of the engine broke because it was synthetic instead of metal and we had to order a special tool to fix this.

The car also has wiring problems and has shorted out two batteries.

General Comments:

Every time we have to do a repair, Ford is completely puzzled and usually has no idea how to fix it. If they DO know how to fix it, they usually have to order a special tool to do so, and it costs twice as much as expected because of the amount of labor required.

Doing labor on your own is practically impossible because the car is set up so most parts are totally inaccessible without taking off other parts or putting it on lifts. Even changing the oil is a huge hassle because the car is so low to the ground, we've had to prop up the body with logs because the jacks don't lift it high enough.

This car has been a pain in the butt the whole time. It has spent more time in the shop that being driven. Last week it dumped me on the side of the highway and I am honestly glad to be rid of it. We've bought Ford for 40 years, but NEVER AGAIN after owning this car.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience. But I have a 1997 Taurus and it has been solid reliable. I have never changed anything except brakes, battery, etc. Once again, sorry you had a bad experience.
