2000 Ford Taurus SE 3.0 Single Overhead Cam

No more Tauruses. No more Fords

Faults:

Sputtering started around 126,000 miles.

Electrical blips and glitches began around 129,000 miles. Radio or fan would not turn on for a few minutes. Speedometer/tach display wouldn't work all the time.

Thermostat went out at 132,000 miles.

Fuel sender, fuel gauge, and low fuel light went out around 142,000 miles.

Transmission slipping now at 146,000 miles.

Supposed to get average of 21 miles per gallon, but currently getting about 12-14 miles per gallon.

General Comments:

While the car feels comfortable and handles pretty well, the cost of maintaining the car is well higher than average.

Make sure to get extensive maintenance records for these vehicles.

You can't just change the oil and gas it up and it be okay like many cars.

This car needs constant attention.

If your transmission is slipping, your gas mileage will go down considerably.

This review is actually a great testimonial to the quality of this car, because it keeps on going with no maintenance.

"Sputtering started around 126,000 miles." That is called having dirty fuel injectors, or maybe even a Mass Air Flow sensor. Try adding some fuel injector cleaner for a few tanks to get the deposits out from that cheap gas you're using.

"Electrical blips and glitches began around 129,000 miles. Radio or fan would not turn on for a few minutes. Speedometer/tach display wouldn't work all the time." This isn't the end of the world at this mileage.

"Thermostat went out at 132,000 miles." Yeah, well, that happens sometimes. If you had changed your engine coolant a couple of times, it might have flushed out the rust and grime and prolonged the life of this thermostat.

"Fuel sender, fuel gauge, and low fuel light went out around 142,000 miles." Again, not the end of the world at this mileage.

"Transmission slipping now at 146,000 miles." That's because you're supposed to change the transmission fluid and filter every once in a while. If you drove it without ever changing it to 146,000 miles, that's pretty darn good.

"Supposed to get average of 21 miles per gallon, but currently getting about 12-14 miles per gallon." That's not surprising considering that you don't take care of this car in any way whatsoever. Dirty fuel injectors, slipping transmission, and dire need of a tune-up adds up to poor gas mileage.

Take care of your car and it will run better for you. Don't take care of it, and you just bring problems on yourself.

Summary:

Forget what you hear. Taurus is the way to go!

Faults:

I ran out of gas once, and the check engine light stayed on for about five days. One day, it was off, and has never come on since.

The rear of the car sags mightily with the slightest amount of weight in the back seat.

THAT IS IT! THE CAR HAS BEEN A GEM FOR US.

General Comments:

In March of 2005, we were in the market for another Camry. We had a deal in place to buy a 98 Camry (with 85K) from a private seller. Well, he never called us back, and it was a blessing. We strolled onto a lot with 2 Camrys for sale, and stumbled upon this beautiful red Taurus. My wife didn't know what it was, and I didn't tell her until she liked the test drive. This is because it's American. This is a no-no for her. Anyway, when she rode in it, it was so comfortable, she fell asleep. Well, she was sold, even if it was a Ford. We got a great deal and an extended warranty. 47,000 miles later, and never an issue! Love my Taurus. Routine maintenance has been addressed, and we hope to get another 100K out of her. She still shines, has power when you need it, and is oh so comfortable. Plenty of leg & trunk room, and a great sound system. I just wish it didn't have that rear sagging issue that all Taurus/Sables have. What is the cause of this? How can we fix it? Our family is growing.

If you want to fix the sag your gonna have to replace the rear struts/springs.
