1992 Ford Tempo GL 3.0L

Summary:

Excellent, reliable car if rust free

Faults:

Nothing engine wise the 3.0 litre is unbreakable. Rust killed this one. Floor shifter rusted through the floor. Very rust prone. Factory muffler system excellent. Poor struts. Handles like a full size car. Not the best looking. Poor headlights, very dull. Leaked oil, from the main seal. Struts leaked oil.

General Comments:

Good fuel efficient car, very peppy for the size. Tried to kill the motor and tranny, but unsucessful. Would not want to quit.

1992 Ford Tempo V6

Summary:

Found On Road Dead

Faults:

Fuel pump went out the day I bought it.

Fuel filter went out four weeks later. The car has an automatic engine shut off switch when your filter is bad.

Automatic seat belts don't work.

Automatic door locks don't work.

Air conditioner doesn't work.

Rear passenger door only opens with a lot of jiggling of the lock.

Driver's door sticks.

Radiator is cracked exactly two months from purchase.

Clock and radio display is broken.

One of the rear seat belts is in a permanent locked position.

And now, I either blew a head gasket or need a new engine. The car is overheating and shutting off and the temperature gage says it is fine.

General Comments:

This car seemed great at one point in time, but I'm beginning to get ill with it.

It's almost cheaper to buy another Tempo than to fix the one I've already have.

When I first got it, it had a nice pick up.

Now it doesn't seem like it wants to pick up at all. It rattles instead.

You got a poorly-maintained car, which can happen with any make year or model. It isn't the car's fault. Every item you mentioned is preventable by routine maintenance. Now, if you were driving along and the roof came off, that would be a symptom of a bad car. I'm prejudiced, I guess--I have owned my '93 Tempo V6 since new, have 218,000 miles on it (including annual trips from Florida to New England and back) and with routine maintenance the car has been largely glitch-free. Not a Rolls-Royce, but hit the interstate with a good station on the radio and the cruise control set to 70 and you can drive all day fatigue-free. Pushing the gas pedal to the floor in this car makes me forget any thoughts of trading for something newer!

I bought a 1991 Ford Tempo in May of 2006 from my aunt. There weren't any problems with it then except for the broken seat belts as most tempos. As soon as I started to drive it everything possible went wrong with it! The motor always ran, but I've had to replace front lower ball joints, front and rear struts, tie rod ends, exhaust system, reinforce the floorboards, water pump, and the alternator. The engine is very reliable, but the rest of the car isn't all that much to brag about.

1992 Ford Tempo GL 2.3L Inline 4 cylinder

Summary:

Good car, reliable and economic

Faults:

The harmonic balancer needs to be replaced.

The emergency brake doesn't work.

Sometimes I have to screw with the climate control to get it to work. Also the light behind it burnt out.

The air filter was replaced.

The fuel filter was replaced.

Oil and filter had to be changed.

Tires were replaced.

Other than the harmonic balancer nothing major has gone wrong with this car. I consider the emergency brake to be a minor thing because I don't have much use for it.

General Comments:

This car doesn't have very much power when your traveling at highway speeds, making it more difficult to pass. Also hard to keep up speed going up hills.

Since I am quite tall, I find the interior of the car to be kind of cramped, however I like the appearance of it. The trunk is fairly large for a car of this size. I haven't had too many complaints about the amount of room in the back seats.

Overall I think this is a great car, however I would definitely recommend getting the V-6 version of it for more power.
