1987 Ford Thunderbird LX 5.0L
Summary:
Drive it hard!
Faults:
I was given the car with wiring issues including the fuel injection, blinkers and brake lights. Mostly we replaced the faulty wires and general troubleshooting.
Replaced battery and alternator. Just to have a good charging system.
Driver's power door lock stopped working in the locked position. Had to remove the locking motor.
Passenger seat will not move forward or back. Haven't looked into that yet.
General Comments:
This is one great car. Since I have owned it, it has spent most of its time on the drag strip.
Other than dual exhaust, under drive pulleys, and the replacement of the 2.75 one wheel drive differential with a 3.45 LSD, this car's drive train is stock.
I have also lowered the car 3" all the way around. This last modification has REALLY improved the handling characteristics of the car. Before the modification I was running 15.85 to 15.95. Afterward I never had a time greater than 15.75. It also centered the tires in the tire wells for a sleeker look.
This car has proven to be very very consistent. For handicap racing, the fuel injection system and AOD tranny has been great.
In 2008 I raced all 14 races at the local NHRA track. I won 4 eliminators and had 5 2nds. Took 2nd in the points championship.
In 2009 I raced all 13 races at the local track and won the points championship. 2 days after clinching the championship, I drove from Northern California to Phoenix Az for the NHRA Division 7 Finals and Race Of Champions. A 2300 mile round trip with 3 days of racing, the car still averaged 24.5 miles per gallon.
I have had some really great cars in the past. This one is really becoming my favorite car of all time. I only have about $1,000 in it right now, though I'm going to have the tranny overhauled just for general maintenance reasons. I plan on installing a B&M Tork Master 2000 at that time so I'm going to add about $750 to that total. I have won over $2300 in prize money in the last 2 years.
The car was on its way to the crusher when I got it. Glad I saved it!
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

As an addendum to the original post: I made a couple of upgrades before this last year's racing...
I replaced the 345 LSD with a 373 LSD. I also had the tranny gone through. When they did that, I added a shift kit and a B&M Torque Master 2000 stall converter (highly recommended for stock 5.0). Still kept the motor completely stock. Added Mustang shorty headers and cold air intake.
And won my second straight NHRA Sportsman Points Championship.
Think I'll paint it this winter :)
