1988 Ford Thunderbird 5.0 V8

Summary:

This is one of the best looking Thunderbirds Ford has made

Faults:

We had some problems with the battery system, but after they were fixed the car ran fine.

The cassette player didn't work right.

The power mirrors didn't work, you could only adjust the mirror to the left or right.

My tailpipe fell off while I was driving.

General Comments:

I rolled my car on a gravel road recently. I was inexperienced (at 16 years old) and it had too much speed and power for me.

I got about 15 miles per gallon with this car, so gas got rather expensive.

This car was fun to drive and I'd love to own another one just like it.

1988 Ford Thunderbird LX 302

Summary:

Kept on going

Faults:

What has gone wrong with my T-bird was I bought it cheap with the oil pump not working.

The graphic equalizer did not work properly.

General Comments:

Even though I knowingly bout the car with a bad oil pump, i continued to drive it daily.

When I got it the bird ran great, and handled even better.

I put no work into it, and just added a bottle of Slick 50.

Ford must have predicted people wanting to run it them into the ground because I got nearly 10,000 miles out of the little 302 that could with no oil circulation.

I bought another motor, but gave up on the project and gave the car to a family member for a project.

Next I plan to buy an 87 Turbo Coupe and maintain it, the ride and looks can't be beat.

1988 Ford Thunderbird LX 5.0 V8

Summary:

V8 power and fully loaded

Faults:

Has leaked everything possible at one point or another.

Troublesome dash lighting.

The transmission doesn't shift very well at times.

Weird electrical short, would start, but not run.

Has been through four starters and three alternators since I've had it. The car also regularly eats water pumps.

General Comments:

It's not very hard to work on, which is a good thing because you will be working on it. Invest in some metric tools.

It looks very wicked in midnight blue, lowered, with 20% tint all around, shaved emblems, and wheels. I've had cars slow down to 55 and change lanes when I've pulled up behind them. :)

It's comfortable on the highway, great for long miles.

Relatively quiet, not much wind noise.

Nice radio (premium sound) from the factory, but I've upgraded recently.

Has every option I can think of, more than some new cars.

It's a blast to drive, with enough power to pull out into heavy traffic and not think twice about it. The gas mileage is decent, but a new Mustang will beat it. I love this car, and despite having to fix it regularly, I plan on keeping it around as a project car for a very long time. It is definitely a unique car, and looks fast sitting still.

1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 2.3 turbo

Summary:

Wonderful car if taken care of

Faults:

Normal wear and tear, tires, one brake job since I have owned it. Replaced in-tank fuel pump, alternator, fuel pressure regulator, and of course the struts and rear shocks.

General Comments:

This car is Ford's best kept secret. I only wish I could find another low miler. The interior for the most part is very nice, but parts are expensive.

1988 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 2.3L turbo

Summary:

Awesome Car. My personal Favorite

Faults:

I had to replace the heater core.. it leaked when I purchased the car.

I used to own an 86 Turbo Coupe I drove it from brand new until it had 400,000 kilometers on it and it still ran.. I find this VERY reliable. No engine rebuild or anything.. had to replace the fuel pump and turbo once though.

General Comments:

These Turbo Coupes are great cars.

The newer style 87 and 88s feel and are much quicker then the older 83-86 models.

Both my 86 and 88 were fun to drive and I'm excited to have one again, I am happy with my new purchase.

The interior has leather and a sunroof.. but the seats seem a little cramped for the driver, my old 86 was good, but the 88s power seats don't fit me right.. then again I am 6'3.
