1993 Ford Thunderbird LX 5.0L

Summary:

An awesome car in so many ways!

General Comments:

Awesome car in every way! Can't say anything negative about my experience of owning this vehicle, except unfortunately it was wrecked when someone plowed into me.

Fast, smooth, and comfortable as hell. Probably the best car that I have ever owned!!!

1993 Ford Thunderbird LX 5.0 High Output V8

Summary:

Be afraid, be very very afraid

Faults:

With regular oil change and service I have had to replace very little on the car. At 135,000 I had to change a brake line. At 140,000 miles I had to replace the power steering pump. At 150,000 I had to change a wheel bearing. It still runs like a champ.

General Comments:

This car is roomy, classy, powerful, and fun to drive (like a bat out of hell).

1993 Ford Thunderbird LX 3.8

Summary:

Good old American garbage!

Faults:

Head gasket blew almost the day I got it.

Thermostat when after that; have replaced it twice.

Wheel bearings replaced not too long after that.

Windows and doors off track; very common with this car.

General Comments:

OK, I work for a metal recycling company and some or our accounts are junk yards. I know when you have a car, it's easy to see them everywhere, but just put it this way, if I needed to get a part for this car it would be no problem. The 3.8 engine is a bad motor and Ford knows it; 10 or more of these cars come in almost daily!

As for the ones with the 4.6, my aunt has had hers forever and the only reason it is down is because she let her son dog it out. This motor is very strong and reliable.

I like the ride and comfort of the cars, and how quiet they are, but if you own one you will soon find out how poorly they are put together. Bottom line thinking by American manufacturers is fine with me, but make something worth handing over to your kids! You can only fool the public so long.

1993 Ford Thunderbird LX 5.0 V8 HO

Summary:

This is truly a great car!

Faults:

Smog pump stopped working at about 198,000 miles

EGR Valve, position Sensor, EGR tube, IDLE air control motor... all at 197,233 miles

Second thermostat at 199,000

All I need to do now is the rear suspension.

General Comments:

Even though I have had to replace a lot of things, most of these things (except the thermostat) were never replaced by the previous owner. I am sure of this because he kept all of the receipts on this car and he owned it for 11 years... For as many miles as are on this car, I am surprised I didn't have to replace more things, with the exception of my doing all around new brakes and all around new tires. Otherwise, I would say that this car runs really great and I would recommend anyone to buy a car like this!

1993 Ford Thunderbird LX 5.0L V8

Summary:

Sweeeeeeeet

Faults:

Transmission gasket leaked when I bought the car, and the previous owner did not keep the fluid levels right. This caused (or I assume was the cause) the transmissions torque converter to burn out.

Passenger auto door lock motor turns and makes a loud noise, but won't lock the door.

Driver side power window rolls up slower than it should.

Power steering leaks, but it's from an easily accessible area.

Driver side tie rod lost a bushing somehow... could the 60-70 mph hard turns have anything to do with it?

General Comments:

This car was an amazing deal. I have had it for about 20000 miles now, and I got it at 140000 in 2006.

Gas consumption is about 15mpg tops... so definitly hits the wallet hard at the pump.

Engine purrs and it's doubtful I will ever see any problems with it.

Transmission isn't as responsive as I would expect for such a large engine, but I still have not given it the rebuild it desperatley needs.

If the last owner would have stayed on top of maintinance, this car would still be in excellent condition.

I would have sold this car if it was not for the vast room for improvement and modifications. I plan to bring it well over 300 HP by adding a racing chip, supercharger, sports transmission, dual headers and cool intake, and removing about 500 pounds of unneccessary weight. Of course... at that point I will get around 7-8 mpg tops.

This car is best for anyone who enjoys working on cars (not fixing, but improving). I think the fuel economy is too low to be practical for anyone who just wants a day-to-day car.

My 1993 Thunderbird 5.0 LX

I bought this fine car when it was new. The city gas mileage runs around 17MPG, but the highway mileage runs around 30+. My problem was that it had no top end. A Toyota Corolla was hard to pass going up hill.

I always keep this car in fine shape. I have installed a K&N cold air system, Flow Master exhaust and a performance chip. I lower it car 2" in the rear and 1 1/2" in the front. Installed low profile tires and 15" rims. I need more.

I want to install a 325 horsepower crate short block, turbo charger with 4lbs boost, monster trans with 3.55 ring and pinion.

What do you think?
