1993 Ford Thunderbird LX 3.8

Summary:

Love it!!! Can't wait to get an SC now!!!

Faults:

Never had a head gasket blow. Bought car one owner with 189000 miles on it. Replaced water pump, and headlight bulbs.

Ran it up too 199998 miles when spun a main bearing, drag racing a camaro. Put new motor in, then blew the AOD. New motor and 200000 mile trans don't go together to well.

Rebuilt trans, shift kit, converter and valve body. Replaced struts and shocks.

All total $7000 in car at this point, with a perfect body, no dents or rust.

Interior is still almost mint, not bad since I worked in a stone mine.

And the last and most recent repair was the passenger inner tie rod, 45 minutes to fix.

General Comments:

I love this car, handles and rides better than any car I've ever owned, and I've had a few, I'm only 27, and this car is #14

The seats are awesome, I've had to sleep in this car a few times.

Performance isn't bad either, considering the weight of the car.

Just waiting for my new dual exhaust, 18" wheels and window tint.

And even when the motor was blown, still drove it to work for 4 months!!!

Started every time I turned the key.

1993 Ford Thunderbird LX 3.8 V6

Summary:

Nice ride, it's a shame it wasn't built better

Faults:

The heat stopped working. Replaced the thermostat, water pump, and had the coolant flushed. EGR valve went out soon after. Then the engine began idling at around 2500 RPM, took it to the dealer and it was a bad idle air solenoid, bad DPFE sensor, and the throttle body needed adjusted (estimated at $500) replaced the idle air sensor and everything seems fine now. Breaks are beginning to warp, broken sway bar and bushings in the back end. rear view mirror fell off the windshield.

General Comments:

The transmission seems to not allow the torque converter to unlock at low speeds causing lack of power.

While running the air the car runs unusually hot and hesitates from a dead stop.

Uses about a half gallon of coolant every 3 months.

1993 Ford Thunderbird LX V6 3.8

Summary:

With my experience, I was not satisfied with the malfunction and quality of major systems

Faults:

My head gasket blew at 63,037 miles.

The grommet on top of transmission disintegrated at 85,000 miles.

Now at 107,000 miles the rod bearing has disabled the car completely.

General Comments:

If I had not had the problems listed above. I would still be driving the car and be very happy.

I liked the rear wheel drive, I liked the way the car cornered through turns. I liked the way it steered and engine performance. The cars V6 engine really performed on the highway well. I liked everything about the car except for the major mechanical problems. It was a pleasure to drive.

1993 Ford Thunderbird LX 5.0

Summary:

An excellent blend of performance and luxury

Faults:

Radiator and water pump replaced at 105,000.

Outer tie rods replaced at 110,000.

A/C compressor replaced at 110,000.

Air Pump and Alternator replaced at 118,000.

Oil Pan gasket replaced at 130,000.

Transmission rebuilt at 135,000.

General Comments:

This car is a nice combination of performance and comfort. The 200hp 5.0 motor has plenty of pep and this car is very comfortable for long rides.

This car required very little maintenance for the first 100,000 miles (my father purchased this car new in 1993), but has become more expensive to own and maintain.

The engine itself has required very little attention as a lot of folks here have mentioned problems with theirs. That's the main reason my dad chose the 5.0 engine over the troublesome 3.8.

The interior is quite roomy, comfortably seats four, and is very quiet. There's lot of room in the trunk too.
