1994 Ford Thunderbird LX 4.6

Summary:

I would love it more if Ford didn't make it

Faults:

Transmission went three times. Twice under warranty. The last was my $$$.

I can't even count how many O2 sensors I had to buy.

The eternal check engine light has now been covered with tape so I don't have to see it anymore. No dealership has been able to tell me why it's on.

Power seat motors are weak.

General Comments:

Overall, I love my T-bird. It has power, it's comfortable, it handles great and the ride is smooth. I just wish that FORD didn't make it. The experience I have had with Ford is horrible to say the least. The reocurring problem with the transmission has been a real hassle.

It now has 140k miles on it and still gets me around in style. And yup, the check engine light has been on for 75k miles. It's a mystery!!

Hey man, I'm getting a 93 Tbird, I think it's a V8, not sure yet, but I did a lot of research on it, and I heard that the main problems, as I'm sure you know, are the starter cables (might be why the lights are on), brakes, and tranny. Some salesman, who owned one said that once he got the parts replaced by third party parts (good ones of course), they never re-occurred.

Hopefully my Tbird will get me around, the story is, it's my late uncles and he didn't get to drive it much, so it has like 10,000 miles, and they just took it to the shop and fixed it all up, so hopefully they replaced all those scary recalls I've been hearing about.

Now the tranny I think was still fine, but rest assured that once that goes I'll be getting a third party one. Hopefully that won't even happen, mainly becuase I don't have the money to fix it up.

Later man

1994 Ford Thunderbird LX 3.8L

Summary:

A baseline luxury car

Faults:

Transmission failure, slipped out of gear and would not shift.

Had to replace the idle air control valve, car would speed up to 35mph on it's own.

Rear deck brake lights are always going out.

Signal light bulbs always burn out.

Voltage goes up and down when the signal lights are on (replaced alternator, still don't know what's wrong).

Blown head gasket.

General Comments:

Other than the mentioned problems, I do love this car!

1994 Ford Thunderbird LX 4.6

Summary:

If the transmission is good, they are great cars

Faults:

$2000 tranny rebuild @ 66000 really hurt. Spoke with Ford reps and all they could say is sorry.

Horrible whine when I start the car. Something with the vacuum.

Minor rust beginning to show up on the corners of the doors.

General Comments:

Besides the transmission, I love the car. It still could shift better.

Very fast and powerful. Rides down the freeway @ 85 like you are on your sofa watching TV.

Would not buy a Ford unless it was a performance car like a T-bird, Mustang, or truck.

1994 Ford Thunderbird LX 3.8L V6

Summary:

More car for the money

Faults:

I have had no serious problems with the car, it is just the little things that all used cars have: rattling head rests, noisy rear suspension.

General Comments:

Even though I have the 3.8L engine I have found ways to give it a little edge. I have removed the air silencer and added a K&N air filter. I have also replaced the plug wires with 8mm wires with Bosch Platinum plugs. The acceleration is still smooth and is now quicker.

1994 Ford Thunderbird LX V8 4.6L OHC SEFI

Summary:

The Bruce Wade of cars

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with the car, although the front rotors are deteriorating. Caused the steering wheel to shimmy under light braking at low speed.

General Comments:

I love this car. I love the "duality" of the car. At low revs, it's smooth and quiet. Above 3000 rpm, it has a little growl to it and really gets things moving in a hurry.

The handling is exceptional. I have only recently pushed the car to its cornering limits. This was no small feat. A 90 deg. turn at around 50 mph with throttle input at the apex lifted the inside tire and let the rear slide, although predictably.

The people whom have had problems or didn't like this car are crazy. It has made a fan out of me. All I can say is, if you go out looking for a used luxury car with a little poop - this is your ticket.
