1992 Geo Tracker 1.6

Summary:

Very reliable and cost efficient

Faults:

I bought the Tracker used from a dealer, so I expected a few things to be wrong with it for the price. The catalytic converter was rattling so it had to be replaced at 82500. The muffler was original so replaced that at the same time since it was rusting pretty bad.

General Comments:

Careful on turns, or you can roll it over on its side. Great on gas.

1992 Geo Tracker LSI Conv. 4WD

Summary:

Excellent Value for your buck

Faults:

The only problem is the zipper on the rear window. Must lube it frequently, must unzip to access thru tailgate. I had to replace the top because of this problem.

General Comments:

Excellent daily driver around town or short trips.

Very reliable.

Easy to handle and park.

Not recommended for frequent extended trips at highway speeds.

Cheap to run and insure.

1992 Geo Tracker LSi 1.6 electronic fuel injection

Summary:

A great car, or maybe it's a truck for the price

Faults:

Starter went out all of a sudden. This cost 150 dollars.

Clutch cable broke at 63000. I believe this cost 60 dollars.

Radiator hose sprung a leak. Cheap to fix but it was in a real tight spot.

Computer or ECM broke rather suddenly at 73,000 miles. Part was extremely hard to find unless I was willing to pay close to a thousand dollars. I ended up paying 450 for a new one. It took me over two months to find this part.

General Comments:

The car is great except for the computer problem.

It accelerates well and is very inexpensive to drive. I find insurance rates are low as well. You would be hard pressed to find a better car with only 60,000 miles on it for less than three thousand.

I have replaced the factory stereo system with more quality equipment and found this to be a big improvement.

I could never willingly get rid of this because I would miss jumping into it during the hot summertime. If I could go back and look for another it would definitely have air conditioning and power steering though. Trust me, not having these will bother you in time.

Seats are comfortable and so is everything else, but the car's convertible top is not particularly well made and is very hard to take on and off.

I'd like to know where you got the computer for $450.00! mine went out and so far the only numbers I'm getting for a replacement are $1000 +.

If you can give me some info on that, I'd appreciate it!

The lack of power steering can be solved by dealing with a wrecker/junkyard. MAKE SURE you tell them up front that you need EVERYTHING to do the conversion from manual to power. My local guy makes up a kit and throws everything into a cardboard box for you.

You need the power box (with bolts), the hoses AND clips (with bolts), the reservoir WITH the mounting bracket (with bolts), or rad support frame (depending on the year), and most important, AN UNDAMAGED STEERING SHAFT!!! (with bolts) It connects your new box with the steering column at the firewall, and it is a different length than the manual one. This thing is made to collapse when you hit something solid, which stops the steering column from spearing you in the chest as you cave the other guy's trunk in.

Don't forget the little wire from the box that connects to the factory wire that's on the fender. This talks to the computer and stops the engine from stalling when you turn the wheel at idle (like when you parallel park).

The pitman arm is the same for both power and manual steering.

Did I mention: "GET ALL THE NUTS, BOLTS, and CLIPS from the power setup!!!"

Price? about $200 to $400 Can. Well worth it!
