Do I have a lemon?

Faults:

The "service engine soon" light keeps coming on though my mechanic says there is nothing wrong with the engine following a needed tune up. Have been told the computer's memory needs resetting, but can only be done by a dealer. Am reluctant to take any vehicle to any dealer since some are less interested in fixing truck, more interested in emptying owners' pockets.

Now truck seems to shudder in idle when it is wet or rainy. (hopefully just at that time as this is a new symptom) Bought used recently with 50k on the clock and hope I've not got a lemon.

General Comments:

Of course with GM nice styling, looks great. Comfortable interior and I like the fold down storage compartment in the middle of seats and CD player.

Just wish I felt more confident about its performance. Already out $ for the tune up and hoping nothing else costs too much.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

The shuddering when wet or cold is due to wet distributator cap. spray some dry & go on your cap & wire's.WD 40 will work as well.

Another possibility is the head gasket could be leaking. Are you slowly loosing antifreeze? Have your mechanic (or any mechanic) check the antifreeze for exhaust residue. This quick chemical test is very cheap and usually provided free. If your head gasket is just starting to leak, the rough idle is very common. Head gaskets have been known to be problems on GM aluminum head/block combinations.

If your check engine light is coming on, then there IS a problem. Any good repair facility should be able to diagnose and repair the problem, it does not have to be a dealership. If your mechanic is telling you there is no problem, find a new mechanic.

I am a "real" mechanic, and cannot afford the bi-directional re-flashing machine that is required to reset computers after replacing the crank position sensor or extended period power loss. This problem is common on ALL Chevy trucks after a certain amount of miles, and doesn't necessarily mean that it needs to be re-programmed.
