1995 GMC Jimmy passenger V6

Faults:

My transmission went bad with 73,000 miles. The alternator went bad with 71,000 miles. The fuel pump went bad with 101,000 miles. The brake cylinder and the rotors were bad on this 1995 GMC Jimmy. If I had too make a choice on this vehicle again. I would make a better choice.

1995 GMC Jimmy SLS

Faults:

Bought my Jimmy in 1995 brand new.

Alternator went at 40,000. Left me stranded.

Alternator went again at 55,000. Once again left me stranded.

Fuel injectors went bad and cost a lot of money to fix

Oil line ruptured and could have ruined the engine if I had not shut it off in time.

Now I'm leaking coolant and need to get rid of it before something catastrophic goes wrong!

Very disappointed with my Jimmy!

1995 GMC Jimmy SLE 4.3L Vortec CPI

Summary:

Very reliable well-built truck

Faults:

Fuel injector clogged at 70,000 miles and again at 110,000 miles.

Vacumn actuator went out at 130,000 miles.

General Comments:

I bought this truck back in early '98 and have to say, it's been a great experience. The truck does have some issues, which I will describe later, but overall has been very reliable.

The truck handles well, and I haven't been able to roll it - despite almost running into two dogs on the freeway and having to avoid numerous obstacles.

The engine has operated well with only minor issues. One is the reoccurring EGR valve issue, which is a simple defect that I have cleared up by using a carbon screen ($15). I did have to replace two fuel injectors, but the third one has been a charm. I just ensure that I run fuel injector cleaner through the engine once in a while.

My vacuum actuator finally went bad, so my 4x4 doesn't engage, but I'll have that fixed soon (I've actually only needed the 4x4 once. I often go off-roading but the truck has a nice weight distribution and doesn't seem to get stuck).

The only major complaint I have is regarding the use of a quasi OBD-II system. I wish they stuck with OBD-I on this vehicle. It has made it very difficult to add engine modifications without tripping up the ECM on the computer. I have added a Flowmaster muffler, a Dynomax catalytic converter, a K&N air intake and an MSD 6AL ignition timer/coil.

This truck is great on or off-road. I've got 140,000 now and expect another 100,000 miles.

The review was well written and informative. I would really like to know what screen he was talking about. I have had more problems with carbon in my EGR valve and spent a lot of money trying to get the carbon out of the engine. A screen seems to make sense, but no one I have spoken to knows anything about it, i.e. parts houses and dealerships.

I'm sure that there are other Jimmy owners in the same situation.

On a 1995 Jimmy, there is no fuel injectors.. its has CPI, central point injection. Sorry bud, I'm a mechanic..

You are a mechanic? I hope you never work on my car. This car is definitely equipped with fuel injectors. Stop giving out wrong advice on message boards.

You were TRYING to roll it?

Regarding whether it has central point injection or sequential fuel injection: the first '95's with the 4.3 still had the cpi, but later on in the model year GMC switched to the sfi. Presumably this one was produced later in the 1995 model year, per the reference to it having OBD-II, which went on every 4.3 from 96-up, along with the sfi. So a '95 could have either one, depending on whether it was built early or late in the model year.

1995 GMC Jimmy SLE Vortec six

Summary:

I've tried really hard to like this vehicle, but it has become expensive

Faults:

- Continuous squeaking around the stereo. Several times, the dealer shop tried to stop this, to no avail.

- Four times the vacuum switch that engages the four wheel drive went bad. (Usually just before a snow storm).

- All four doors have squeaked at various times. The dealer shop has tried numerous times to add moulding to remedy this, also to no avail.

- Driver-side front door moulding has come off on three separate occasions. Apparently, the clips are too short, causing them to snap under any stress.

- Passenger-side front door mouldings have come off on two separate occasions.

- Most recently, carbon deposits are clogging the PVC valve open. This is robbing the engine of the necessary vacuum to operate the brakes and keep the vehicle from stalling.

General Comments:

I really like the body style, but with all the problems, it has been one big, expensive disappointment.
