1999 GMC Jimmy SLE 4.6

Summary:

This vehicle is great, and I would purchase another one

Faults:

Brakes wear easily, but you can expect that from an SUV.

Just recently (89k miles) it will just stop working. No idiot lights come on and it will just stall. I leave it overnight and it will work fine the next day. Could be water in the gas, but it's happened a few times now from different gas stations.

At 87k miles the tube for the coolant broke.

General Comments:

This vehicle is great. The seats are comfortable.

Lots of room for passengers.

OK space for cargo when the seats are down.

Handles like an SUV should. You can expect to roll over easier with them, they are top heavy.

Low clearance for an SUV, but overall great off road! ;) (many times)

This vehicle is great and was cared for by the previous owner. Someone else might think different, it all depends on how you it was treated.

Have you checked the fuel pump, that is what your problem sounds like. It isn't water in the gas, especially if you have used different gas stations. It sounds like the pump. When they are going bad, they do some quirky things.

General Comments:

Just purchased this rig off a used lot "AS IS". I knew when I purchased it that it needed brakes and the right hand front wheel bearing was out. I fix my own vehicles, so I figured $300.00 to $400.00 to fix those parts. Actual repairs were just over $300.00, so I was happy with that, seeing how the lot took off $250.00. I purchased it for $2,750.00 plus taxes and plates.

Replaced all four brake rotors and one caliper (not uncommon to replace these aluminum calipers), and the right hand front hub assembly. Purchased the (quiet brake pads) from NAPA Auto Parts as well as the other parts needed. Replaced all the parts myself, so it was no big deal. Anyone with mechanical skills can replace these parts themselves if they have metric tools and a 2 jaw puller for the hub assembly.

So far we like our Jimmy. It drives great, and yes the door hinges need replacing as most GM door hinges do sooner or later. Dealers will rip you off if you let them replace these parts.

One dealer wanted $250.00 for the front hub bearing assembly. NAPA had it for $145.00 so shop around.

I'm not sure why others are getting such poor gas mileage, and it's a 4wd SLE 4 door. This rig is getting 22 mpg with the air on. It's body is in great shape for a 1999.

Oh one more thing, the light bulb under the hood was burnt out. OK, that's petty. Ball joints are all in great shape. All ball joints need to last is to be greased. No ball joint on any vehicle lasts if the ball joints are not greased. This just came from a shop and they didn't even grease the top ball joints. So, if you are interested in one of these vehicles, check it out at a shop before you buy it, and make sure you know what your getting into before you purchase it. Most used vehicles have something wrong with them.

1999 GMC Jimmy

Summary:

Lemon

Faults:

My gas lines have been replaced two times since I bought it.

My driver door sticks as well as the window.

My fuel pump has gone bad twice.

My wheel hub assembly has been replaced.

My transmission has been rebuilt.

My battery has been replaced.

My oxygen sensor is bad.

I have another gas leak in the rear of the car.

General Comments:

I purchased my car from a used car dealer in October of 2006 with 140,000 miles on it.

In the Spring of 2007 I had to replace two gas lines in the front of my car because of a major gas leak. The battery was replaced shortly thereafter.

In the Summer of 2007 I replaced the fuel pump, put brakes and rotors in the front and the back of my vehicle. Not to mention that the door sticks and the window sometimes want roll up or down on the driver side.

By the beginning of of this new year, I have replaced the wheel hub assembly. I also went in for an oil change and tune-up, and lo and behold the transmission went out. The Jeep stopped going in reverse.

I've since re-built the transmission in March of 2008 and now I need an Oxygen Sensor and I have another gas leak in the rear of my car. I am a single parent with three children, of which I have to pick up for track practice, school, and transport back forth on a regular basis. I work over thirty miles from my home and I need my car to get back and forth to a full time job, as well as a part time job. I just want to know if there has been any recalls or defects in the manufacturing of the car initially. I owe more on the car than what is currently worth right now. I don't know about anybody else, but right now if something else goes wrong with this jeep I'm going to be bankrupt. At this rate I will spend just as much on repairs for the car as the initial price of the car when it was purchased. I am at my wits end and I needed to vent.
