1986 GMC Sierra 1500 305 4bbl

Faults:

Fuel pump went at 425,500kms.

Seats worn when bought..

A few cross members rusted out.

Needed body work done to it from harsh Nova Scotia winters.

Needs oil pan (it's rusted out); it was like that when I bought it.

Leaking oil and transmission fluid (but I'm sure it's just some old gaskets).

The passenger side suspension brace is worn out and could be dangerous (but I'm selling the truck anyway).

High and low beam switch at 425,000kms.

Reverse light at 425,000kms.

Stereo was blown, so I replaced it at 425,000kms.

All speakers were blown at 425,000kms.

Passenger and driver side window seals went at 425,000kms.

Fuel filter at 425,500kms.

General Comments:

I guess I can't complain too much about the truck needing stuff, seeing that it has over 426,000kms... but on the good side, parts for this truck can be fairly cheap, and you can find just about anything at your local junk yard.

The truck accelerates pretty good with the 3 speed auto, and sometimes will break loose from a stop, but struggles for highway driving, and tops out around 150kmh. It also isn't too easy on fuel either.

This was my first road legal truck, but I wish I'd gotten a 4x4, but this is a great truck if you look after it. Not too many vehicle's will last 426,000kms with the original engine!

1986 GMC Sierra Classic 305 V8

Summary:

I am extremely impressed with this truck!

Faults:

Nothing has gone with wrong with it at all. It has a slight brake shudder (warped rotor probably?) when stopping fast, but it's nothing too drastic.

General Comments:

For the low price I paid for this vehicle, and the K's on it, I am completely blown away! This is truly one of the GM products that people are talking about when they say "they don't make them like they used too!"

It always starts, no matter how cold, sometimes -40 degress celicius, even if I don't plug the block heater in. It burns no oil, leaks nothing, and has no weird quirks or anything. Even the power windows and locks still work!

If I have any complaints, it's that it is slightly hard on gas, and it's not the most comfortable vehicle I own. But then again it's a 1/2 ton truck.

Steve,

You couldn't be more right. My '86 GMC Sierra Classic still has the original engine and runs like it's brand new. Also, like yours, mine has that "brake shudder" while slowing. Something common to this truck, maybe? Anyway, you just can't kill these trucks. --Wayne in Indiana.

I have a 1986 Sierra Classic SWB two/tone Blue and Grey, with the 305 engine. It rides a little rough because of the short wheel base, but it is a great truck. I think when GM quit building this truck, they quit building trucks.

I am in the process of purchasing a 1986 GMC Sierra 1500. it has 50,000 miles on it, a 350 cubic inch motor automatic transmission, aftermarket tape player, and fresh paint. I live in the northeast and the truck is from California, so it has virtually no rust. It is two toned blue and silver and has a 6ft box on it as well as 4wd. I really like this truck and hopefully I will have it by the end of next week.

1986 GMC Sierra High 5.7L 4bbl

Summary:

A reliable truck for the price

Faults:

There is the usual rust for a vehical of this age.

Failures of gages speedometer and gas gage.

General Comments:

This truck is very capable off-road as well as on. The 4-wheel drive with manual locking hubs works excellent. On the road it handles very well, as it is responsive and has plenty of power and speed.

The transmission in the truck is something to say is wonderful. It has a manual 3speed with Overdrive.
