2000 GMC Sierra SLE 5.3L

Summary:

One of the best trucks on the road

Faults:

Just normal maintenance.

Plus serpentine belt.

General Comments:

I have the 1500 SLE Extended Cab. Mine is an early three door model.

I am from Wyoming, and the truck is used for three things, on dirt and gravel roads, around town city driving, and on highway. And it does all three wonderfully.

The Z71 package makes the truck great off road. The ride and handling is superior to other trucks. The Vortec 5300 is a great engine with a lot of power and outstanding fullsize V8 fuel economy.

The transmission is not the smoothest shifting, but is the strongest and most versatile I have had in a truck.

It does not have much wind noise like other trucks.

The bucket seats are comfortable.

I am would buy another GMC in a heartbeat.

2000 GMC Sierra 4.3L V6

Summary:

I was blessed with this deal

Faults:

This was an old construction truck that I picked up for $700. When I bought it I knew it needed a windshield, tires, shocks and brakes. I gradually got these things done at my leisure.

Nothing else has ever gone wrong on the vehicle. The intake is dry. It uses no fluids at all and the traction in snow is very good, more so with some extra weight in back. Mileage is good too. I get the full 17 M.P.G. or more in city type driving.

General Comments:

This vehicle seems bulletproof. It's very reliable. Every item on it seems heavy duty. The size and extra room make it easy to work on if needed.

2000 GMC Sierra SLT 7.4L 454 V8

Summary:

Everyone needs a GMC Sierra Classic

Faults:

Not much. Only thing I can really complain about are the brakes. Frequent town driving requires me to replace them on a "more-than-often" basis, but that's all.

General Comments:

Isn't the smoothest ride, but hey, it's a truck. I get about 8 in town (I drive with a lead foot) and have seen as good as 16 on the highway but average 12-14 mpg. The reliability of this truck has been outstanding. I have been a loyal Ford owner but had wanted a 2000 GMC Sierra classic for it's looks, but also got great performance and reliability. I like it much better than my 2002 F-250 V10.

2000 GMC Sierra Z71 5.3L

Summary:

My Sierra Z71 step-side has been great

Faults:

The 2W/4W dashboard switch (the Service 4W light came on).

General Comments:

When "Service 4W" light comes on, and/or you find it won't switch into or out of 2W or 4W reliably, and/or you get 'random' changes into 4W drive or back to 2W drive... the problem is the 2W/4W dashboard switch's soldering is bad (not the switch itself). It's called a "cold solder joint'. Just pull the switch down so you can access it and re-melt each solder connection (use a hot solder gun to melt it quickly so you don't heat the inside of the switch). That's IT. Nothing more. I know the factory in Arizona where the switch gets soldered, and I know the solderers and their QC issues!! I fixed mine myself, never had a problem since. It's the solder joints on the back of the switch. Good luck.

2000 GMC Sierra SLT 5.3 V8

Summary:

Way too much mechanical problem for such low miles

Faults:

Universal joints on main drive shaft gone bad at 30,000

Universal joints on front axle bad at 48,000

Multiple, multiple brake jobs.

ABS brakes terrible, problem not fully corrected with recall.

Rear tailgate hinges rusting badly, tailgate likely will fall off this year.

Brake line rusted through resulting in leaking of brake fluid. $1200 repair. Needed to lift cab off frame to repair.

General Comments:

Comfortable cabin, but overall detracted by large number of squeaks and rattles.

2000 GMC Sierra Z-71 5.3

Summary:

Satisfactory

Faults:

Tow/Haul has started to engage by itself, I have to turn truck off and back on to disengage, the button at end of column shift lever does not seem to work. Can anyone help me?

The gas pedal stick sometimes, I've been told to clean the air intake manifold.

I hear the clunk of the drive line engaging when I step on the gas.

The ABS and Brake and lights are on most of the time, the mechanic said that the instrument panel computer? needs to be replaced. Forget it, too expensive.

The low fuel light comes on at the same time the fuel needle falls down to empty, I just fill it up every 300 miles

General Comments:

The truck still looks and sounds good.
