2000 GMC Sonoma SLS 4.3

Summary:

It is the best vehicle I have ever owned!!

Faults:

When I first purchased the truck it had some transmission problems. The dealer fixed it because of the warranty. I Also I have had the broken recliner problem. The other problem I have have had is the broken third handle. I have found that a regular greasing solves that problem.

General Comments:

The fuel economy is great on this truck. I average 23 to 27 miles per gallon. It is the 4.3 six cylinder and it is faster than my friends dodges. I have put more than 100,000 miles on the truck in less than two years. I haven't had any major problems since the warranty expired. I still have the original spark plugs, power steering fluid, coolant, and serpentine belt. The truck now has 150,000 miles on it. The six ciylinder gets better fuel economy than the Nissan's four cylinder that I owned previously. It also has much more power than the Nissan did.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

There is no way that truck gets that. I have a 2000 Sonoma and I'm lucky if I get 17.

I just bought a 2000 with 126k and the 2.2L in it, and it seems to run pretty good. Does anyone have any idea how many miles these motors are good for? Please send replies to jarlea5@aol.com

Yeah man, I completely agree, I went on a road trip with some buddies and I barely got 20 on the highway.

2000 GMC Sonoma SLS 2.2L

Summary:

Typical American-made pickup?

Faults:

I've experienced a few of the same traits mentioned already--low power with the 4-cylinder, unremarkable gas mileage.

Some problems I've had include:

-Third door latch broke twice. Luckily, both instances were covered by warranties. Dreading reccurence of problem, since warranty now expired.

-Lights (headlights, dash lights, etc.) flicker off periodically at night. Possibly alternator/voltage regulator problem, but dealer service department couldn't catch due to intermittent nature. (Anyone else have this problem?)

-Lately, after about 38k miles and 3.5 years, engine now periodically loses power after I run the ac, and step on the gas. Not very comforting when the light turns green, or when I'm trying to cross traffic! (Anyone else have this problem as well?)

-Service Engine Soon light comes on intermittently now. Again, dreading the hassle and expense of taking it in for servicing.

General Comments:

Sometimes I wonder if GM did too good a job designing their products to fail prematurely, so their service dealers can get revenue. After good experiences with Honda vehicles, my confidence in GM is not very high.

I have had the issue with the loss of power after running the a/c for just a short while. Yes it is just a temporary loss of power, but still not what you would like to happen in traffic. Truck has 74000 miles otherwise trouble free. Any suggestions on what might be the problem.

I'm sorry for your mishaps, but I haven't had any problems with the truck. You should of went with the 4.3L and there wouldn't be any lack in power.

2000 GMC Sonoma ZR2 4.3 vortec V6

Summary:

Excellent off-road package straight from the factory

Faults:

I have had no problem thus far with the vehicle.

General Comments:

The ZR2 off-road package is great. It's nice to see the suspension and 31 inch tires come straight from the factory.

A small truck with a big truck feel. The cab is very roomy and comfortable.

The V6 delivers excellent power.

Much better quality and feel than other trucks I have owned (Ford & Toyota). The truck feels very solid inside and out.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

2000 GMC Sonoma SLS 4.3 V6

Summary:

I bought it, I'll live with it

Faults:

The belt tensioner is an ongoing problem (makes the truck sound like it's powered by a hamster in an exercise wheel).

Daytime running lights went out, took the dealer almost a week to figure it out.

Wind noise through the windshield seal, dealer can't fix it.

Various squeaks and rattles have developed.

Seat-back recliner handle breaks easily due to poor metals (dealer fixed it under warranty).

I lost my brakes at 60mph (fluid leak), dealer fixed at no charge after the warranty had expired.

The rear-end makes a grinding noise every once in a while (open differential).

General Comments:

I bought this truck on a whim after wrecking my '99 GMC Sierra, a truck I truly loved. I wish now that I had stuck to the plan and bought another Sierra, but this truck looked so good sitting on the lot.

Consistently poor fuel economy (15-16mpg), dealer says it's normal.

It handles like a Camaro, but rides like a horse.

Thin body metal.

Easily-chipped paint.

Poor steering-stop design (metal on metal).

Poor turning radius.

Transmission has no idea which gear to be in during full-throttle maneuvers.

Less power than my '99 Sierra with the same engine, transmission, and rear-end.

It looks good.

It works hard.

A few weird and complicated designs on things like the door speaker brackets, headlamp assembly brackets, etc.

I also want to say that all vehicles have their problems, no vehicle is flawless. I probably won't buy another current-generation Sonoma or S-10, but then again who knows.

The tensioner can easily be fixed to eliminate that high pitched screaming noise that you described as "it sounds like its being powered by a hamster exercise wheel". I'm guessing YOU screwed up the brakes by pushing them to the limits every time you had the chance, it would have easily broke a brake line putting a lot of pressure on it all the time. There is no Sierra that has the same engine, transmission, and rear end as a Sonoma. A Sierra is far bigger, and far more powerful, seeing as how it's a full sized pick-up and the Sonoma is not. The Sonoma should be getting 20-25 mpg, but you're probably straining the engine trying to be a show off with horsepower. The windshield problem, I'm guessing the windshield will have to be replaced, because there is more than likely a leak in the urethane seal, which would require a new windshield. But this is true for any new vehicle, not just the Sonoma. And finally, the day time running head lights, if it took the dealership a week to figure out the problem then you need to start going to a regular shop. Which in most cases, for most reasons, a regular shop is just as qualified to repair or do maintenance work on your vehicle as the dealership is, but a fraction of the cost.
