1999 Honda Accord LX 2.3

Summary:

Best car for price, but double check engine. Get Certfied Honda used

Faults:

We had piston slap on the engine making it knock really bad. The car was Honda certified and the noise started shortly after we purchased it used at 44K from the dealer. Dealer replaced short block and gave rental car for free. It took about 2 weeks for them to submit the warranty work and get the car back on the road. It had two call backs to the dealer because they left the exhaust bolts loose and the check engine light came on since they broke the sensor when putting the engine in.

Has dash rattle that is annoying when driving.

Transmission is jerky at slow stops.

Dealer was Honda Bloomfield in Michigan.

Front Brakes and tires replaced at 55K.

General Comments:

Comfortable ride and reliable car at 75K then it got totaled after my wife tboned a car that pulled in front of her. Looking at the V6 now instead of 4 because of the reliability concerns with 4cyl.

1999 Honda Accord EX 4 cylinder VTEC

Summary:

Great bargain for a great car, extremely reliable, maintenance and upkeep are a breeze

Faults:

There is minor wear and tear on the center arm rest and driver-side floor mats.

General Comments:

Great pick-up and handling.

The 5-speed manual is as smooth today as the day it was made.

Third Honda that I have owned, second that I purchased used. Previous 40k+ miles were just break-in miles!

11 month follow-up (110,00km) : I was able to fix the light on the clock, it's an easy DIY, if you can replace the vanity lights, then you can replace the clock light. Instructions are easily googled, but you pull out the clock unit and change the bulb with a philips. The bulb at the dealer runs ~$6 CAD.

Accord still runs great.

16 months - so far so good. good performance all around still, very satisfied. minor things:

-interestingly, when I tried mid-grade fuel (at a different gas station than usual), the car started to stall at low-revs, which disappeared when I went back to regular. I suspect problems with gas quality rather than some sort of intolerance for mid-grade.

No added maintenance other than regular schedule.

4.5 yrs of ownership and doing well. I replaced timing belt (regular maintenance). Dealer tried to upsell a water pump replacement at the same time, (not recommended by Honda) and I defered. We'll see who's right. Overall still satisfied with the Accord.

1999 Honda Accord EX V6 Sedan 3.0 V6 200hp VTEC

Summary:

Fantastic car, excellent value

Faults:

I just bought it, so this review won't speak so much to reliability, as to driving impressions and general enjoyment.

I believe my lumbar adjustment switch doesn't work. I didn't know it was there until I sat down and read nearly the entire manual the other night (a real car geek).

General Comments:

My 2000 Accord LX with 77K miles was totaled in a horrible accident, so I had to buy a car to replace it.

This car is just fabulous. Assuming the reliability matches that which I've experienced with every other Honda, then it will be the used car deal of a lifetime (for me at least).

The amenities on this car never end. It is truly an enthusiast's machine; definitely a "guy car."

Everyone knows this 3.0 200hp V6 is one of the best engines around. And if you're used to Hondas, you'll know that the transmission behaves a little more like a manual: you feel it when it's downshifting, or engaging the torque converter. This is a characteristic that people often love or hate. I like it, myself.

The leather interior and seat support are awesome. It feels great and looks great. The level of luxury truly rivals mom's new Benz. The quality of the materials and the assembly are first rate. I looked at many 3-5 year old Accords when I was shopping. Of course some had been treated better than others, but all of them were still solid. I never saw anything that appeared prematurely worn.

I thought I wouldn't like the automatic climate control, but I ended up loving it. It's very easy to override if you want direct control over heating and cooling.

The cruise control and audio controls on the steering wheel are also very cool. The stereo speakers probably aren't the best around, but I think it sounds fine, and I really like the CD player.

Hondas hold their value extremely well. My old one was worth more than I owed the bank. No gap insurance needed. So I got a small cash "bonus" when it was totaled. If you're trying to buy one, though, depreciation can be your friend when it comes to trim levels. A totally loaded EX V6 like mine is not that much more expensive than a base LX, when the car is 4 years old.

I would highly recommend this as a used car purchase. Go drive one, and you'll be impressed.

P.S. Be sure you get the 5-digit anti-theft code for the stereo from the previous owner! Otherwise you have to go to the dealer if your battery is ever disconnected.
