1991 Honda Civic DX 1.5L D15B2

Summary:

The Civic hatchback is a brilliant piece of Japanese engineering

Faults:

I had to replace the passenger drive shaft twice; nasty potholes here in the northeast.

General Comments:

This car was, hands down, the best car I have ever owned. Not only did it give me great mileage, around 38mpg in commuter traffic, it had enough get up and go to get me out on the road.

Despite being a small car, this model is safe, or at least a lot safer than I'd assumed. This car met its end on the freeway, when it was rear-ended at 50+ miles an hour. Both me and my passenger walked away with no damage, but the bruises from our seat belts.

1991 Honda Civic DX 1.5

Summary:

Very fun and reliable to drive, but wish I got the Si instead

Faults:

Oxygen sensor went bad at 153,000 miles.

Distributor went bad at 150,000 miles.

Coil went bad at 149,000 miles.

Main relay went bad at 120,000 miles.

Radiator cracked at top at 90,000 miles.

Distributor shaft seal leaking at 80,000 mils.

Valve cover seals leaking at 80,000 miles.

Oil pan seal leaking at 80,000 miles.

CV joints went bad 2 times on both sides since I've owned the car.

I have gone through 4 mufflers since owning this car, finally bought a stainless steel muffler.

Seats get stiff after a few years.

Red paint faded really fast, about 4-5 years.

Headlights retained water when it rained, but bulbs never blew.

Tail lights retained water when it rained and started molding up after about 3 years old.

Seat belts didn't like to retract in high humidity and would get caught between the door and car causing a little damage if you were not careful.

The manual stick shifter can be little temperamental at times. Sometimes you have to cycle through 1st and 2nd gear to get it to pop into reverse. You civic owners know what I mean.

General Comments:

This car has the best handling out of a stock suspension for a compact car.

Very reliable car, it has never left me stranded on the side of the road.

I average 32-35 miles per gallon driving a combination of city and highway.

It's 1.5 liter, 92 Horse power engine loves to be raced and pounded hard on the road.

With a few aftermarket modifications you can easily get about 115-125 HP out of it, like I did.

Roomy interior for a compact hatchback car.

This car just keeps on going, as long as you give it some tender loving care.

I agreed completely with your Honda Civic review. I did have the SI and had been stranded MANY times, the engine light came on, the car overheated and didn't get to 100,000km.

Before I got my Honda, I didn't know gas could last so long. It's great!

Great review! I have a 1990 Civic 3 door hatch with 175000 miles on it, never left me stranded. The only thing I have ever had to do to it is brakes, tires, and 1 new exhaust. Great car!!

I have a 1990 Civic DX 3 door hatchback manual 5 speed that I have owned since mile 1. The car runs as if brand new. It has 200,000+ miles on it. I followed the Honda maintenance schedule, and have not had any problems. I bought this car after having had 2 cars in a row that weren't Honda, and which were always having some kind of problem that required a tow. (Days before cell phones.) My Honda has never left me stranded. My big worry involves washing, vacuuming and waxing. I have 2 little rust spots at the rear wheel wells that I discovered can be easily repaired, making my Honda look as brand new as it runs. I highly recommend Honda Civic along with a regular maintenance and a yearly overall health check.

When I read this review. I feel great and proud to have the 1990 Honda Civic DX... The car reaches 278,000 km and still run great...However, the Muffler needs to change soon because of Rust... Can Anybody helps me to tell where I can buy a stainless steel muffler for the Honda Civic?...so many thanks.
