1996 Honda Civic EX !.6 L4

Summary:

Good car. Driving it in the rain makes me a nervous wreck

Faults:

Interior rattles, Paint chips very easily.

General Comments:

This is a very good, reliable car. Even though it has the VTEC engine it is by no means fast. Pretty good gas mileage 25-35. Reliable. Safe? The car makes me nervous, it is very light and couple that with no anti-lock brakes and it's safe to say driving in the rain is interesting. The brakes are pretty easy to lock up. The car also hydroplanes very easily.

Sounds like you need new tyres...

1996 Honda Civic DX Sedan 1.6 Litre, 106HP

Summary:

A rare and good vehicle

Faults:

Noisy belts.

Exhaust manifold cracked.

These problems have not been fixed, and it still runs great. I plan on getting these problems fixed soon. Cup-holder latch broke too, but that's not a big deal.

General Comments:

Good preformance for 38MPG. Hatchback is lighter and faster, the sedan is bulkier, but still great. Put in an after-market stereo, the Honda stereo is terrible. I bought a Pioneer CD deck with Polk speakers, and the sound is great. The car runs very well, especially being in the Northeast winters and springs. The ride is good. I really like the crazy 13" tires, the silver steel wheels. Funny. Great car 89% awesome, just a bit to feminine. But seriously, very reliable and durable. It is hard to find this car in a manual transmission though, in the US. It took me three months to find a stick-shift Civic DX.

1996 Honda Civic DX Hatchback

Summary:

A great first car for someone willing to be patient and love it; be prepared to have for a long time

Faults:

When I bought the car, the muffler (tailpipe and all) had rusted and fallen off. From what I understand now, this is only because someone had tried to put an after-market muffler from a late eighties Suburban on it.

Also, the driver's window would not roll down because of the regulator breaking. From what I hear, this is a fairly common, yet expensive, fault with this car.

General Comments:

I loved my Civic dearly until the day that an old woman pulled out in front of me and totalled my car. I still love it. Even though it was somewhat lacking in trunk space, it had a great sporty feel about it.

Having no tachometer was a drag, and the shifter would move when I would accelerate and decelerate.

My stereo also kinda went on the fritz and stopped being compliant with my volume needs. If I would turn it up, it would stay the same or go down, and if I turned it down, it would skyrocket in an unholy cacophony.

1996 Honda Civic LX 1.6 4 cylinder.

Summary:

Great little car

Faults:

At 53K miles, the left front axle had to be replaced, and in 2003 it had new front brakes. Except for those two things and regular work, this car has been great.

General Comments:

Accleration is a bit lackluster, but the car gets great gas mileage, and sounds sporty. Everything else about the car has held up well over the last 10 years, and I can promise my next car will be a Honda.

1996 Honda Civic EX 1.7 DOHC

Summary:

Great value. Will last forever with regular maintenance

Faults:

Power steering pump at 54,000 - replaced under extended warranty.

Heat shield removed due to excessive rattling at 60,000.

Muffler at 91,000.

Tires at 91,000.

Distributor & Spark plug wires (90K service) at 100,000.

General Comments:

This has been an excellent car for the 6 years that I have owned it.

I have never been left stranded by this car and it has never failed to start on even the coldest of days. I did notice that if I don't start it regularly (say for over a 2 weeks), it takes a few cranks to get the engine to turn over. Also the acceleration is lackluster compared to my old Chevy Berretta, but that's to be expected in a compact car. Aside from the slow acceleration, I love this car. It's dependable and looks good.

1996 Honda Civic EX coupe 1.6-liter, 16-valve, 4 cylinder. VTEC (127-hp)

Summary:

Best darn car I've ever owned

Faults:

Driver's side power window came out of the track.

Exhaust rusted out, needed complete replacing.

Clasp for the cup-holder lid broke. Repair of this small piece requires replacement of the whole cup-holder unit.

Gasket for the sunroof is showing age, but still seals. To replace requires replacing entire sunroof unit.

General Comments:

Peppy engine with excellent pickup, high gas mileage (35 mpg/average). VTEC gets good power out of the four cylinders, runs quietly, and doesn't sacrifice gas mileage to do it.

Loves to be driven in the twisties. Might not have the image of a sports car, but it definitely has the heart of one.

Remarkably comfortable backseat for adults, considering the overall size of the car is pretty small.

Precise, smooth manual gearbox; second best I've ever worked, and doesn't miss first place by much (best was a BMW 316, so it's in very good company).

Monochromatic interior is pretty drab. I dressed mine up with stick-on trim appliques.

Just a lot of fun to drive, and easy on the wallet to do it. I don't think I'll ever own another car that's not a Honda/Acura product.
