1998 Honda Civic EX Sedan 1.6L VTEC

Summary:

Great gas mileage, high price

Faults:

The alternator failed as soon as I got it, also the moon roof curcuit breaker would overheat when I closed it, I would have to wait to reopen it.

Recently the power lock broke on one of the rear doors. Everything else is great.

General Comments:

Not very comfortable for long trips. The car gets outstanding gas mileage and it runs like a top. The bad thing is everyone seems to own one.

1998 Honda Civic LX

Summary:

Not good value and lacks quality

Faults:

1. Had to replace the alternator at 20,000 miles after the car died on me a few times. Covered by the warranty

2. The car gets very very easily dented. To prove it both side doors have dents made from other car doors.

3. Paint tends to chip very easily. I have to apply touch up paint very regularly.

General Comments:

Overall comfortable car to drive although the interior is a little noisy at highway speeds.

Major gripes:

1. Easily dented (should be called Civic "soda can")

2. Brakes wear out frequently.

I don't understand Civic brake complaints. I just replaced the front pads on my 98 Civic EX 5-speed AFTER 104,000 miles. They still had 1/8" of pad left on them. I have never had pads last more than 50K on any other vehicle.

1998 Honda Civic HX (5-speed version not CVT au 1.6 VTEC SOHC

Faults:

I bought it new and I knew I would be leaving the country within 3 years, so I drove the car like I was a mad man. I'm surprised the engine did not blow up, however a few belts and pulleys did come off, but I can assure you it was my lack of sympathy for the car and is no reflection on Honda. However, the windshield was not installed properly in the factory, so above 80mph there was a little annoying whistle, few garages did anything about it, one manager ripped out the whole seal and re-glued it and that fixed it. Made in America, not Japan, remember that... English and Irish Civics are manufactured in Japan.

General Comments:

Great car, it's a fuel miser. Different gearing ratios, mean 90mph in 3rd and 60mph in 2nd! Tops out at 122mph due to engine and tach limiters.

"Made in America, not Japan, remember that... English and Irish Civics are manufactured in Japan"

Not anymore. They are manufactured at a large Honda plant in Swindon, England.

Five door Civics were built in England. Three doors were built in Japan. 4 and 2 doors were built in USA. Strangely the USA ones were the most reliable.
