1999 Honda CR-V 2.0

Summary:

This may be the best car I have ever owned

Faults:

So far, nothing has gone wrong with this car. Please note that I am a freak for preventive maintenance.

General Comments:

This little SUV is tops. It’s good on gas and roomy. It’s not a hot rod, but, suits my needs perfectly.

When I first bought the car I thought I had been taken. The 99 CRV has “Grade Logic” transmission. So, the computer decides when to shift up and down. This is for gas mileage and to assist the real time four wheel drive. So, the result is that when you slow, but, do not stop, then accelerate the car seems to jump into first gear. I thought there was something wrong with the car. I took it to Honda and they looked it over, serviced it, and said it was fine, and it has been fine. Now I don’t even notice it.

The CR-V is a fantastic all around car. I had to get from North Carolina to Tennessee in a virtual blizzard. I was a bit worried about it. The real time 4 wheel drive got me there when most vehicles, and all of the semi-trucks were on the shoulder of the road.

Real time 4 wheel drive is not designed for crawling through ponds of mud or climbing rocks. It will cut through snow, mountain dirt paths, and ford light duty streams. So, for nearly every member of the population it is perfect. If you want to cross the Sahara then you need something else.

I though I would give an update on this car. It's been three years or more since I wrote this review and I have had no problems with this car. I do have a slight oil leak, but I haven't bothered to even look for it yet. Very minor.

I have used this car in the snow a few times, and it always does a great job of getting me where I need to go. My work car is a Ford Explorer and the CRV goes better in the snow than does the Explorer, at least the CRV seems to track straight. The Explorer fish tails a bit in the snow.

Last winter I was up in the mountains and it started to snow and ice. The CRV didn't care at all. I went up and down mountains on the drive home and never had a minutes problem. The real time 4x4 is not for mudding and rock crawling. But on slick roads it is awesome.

1999 Honda CR-V 2.0 liter AWD

Summary:

Great

Faults:

The motor mount needs replacing.

Need new front struts.

Have already replaced the spark plugs and tuned it up.

Rear door latch broke.

Changed all fluids in the engine, transmission and all wheel drive system.

General Comments:

It ran great. Fot it at 200,000 miles for 2,000 dollars from a Chevrolet dealership.

Great gas mileage, and I had K & N air filter in and tornado gas saver, and get about 34 mpg.

Handles very well, and my wife is short at 5 feet 3 inches tall, and she can see everything, and very comfortable.

Also handles great in heavy snow and icy roads.

It really wonderful vehicle.

1999 Honda CR-V

Summary:

One of the best decisions I've ever made

Faults:

The emergency brake light comes on when the car is cold, but will go off when I hit a bump in the road or after driving for a while (usually by the time I get to work). This only happens in the winter and hasn't caused any problems.

The spark plug for the dashboard lights keeps blowing out.

General Comments:

This car had been great since the day I bought it. I haven't had any major problems and, from what I hear from other CR-V owners, it will continue to be a very reliable car.

It gets great mileage compared to other SUVs, and is spacious enough to haul just about anything. It's a great road-tripping car.

It's got impressive pickup for a 4-cylinder.

I love my CR-V and plan on driving it until the day it gives out on me, which will be a very long time.

A few stories about what a beast my CR-V is:

It was 3am on some back roads in Maryland when I hit a deer head-on going at least 60mph in my CR-V. I checked the car -- not even a scratch!...though I can't say the same for the deer. This car is truly an undercover beast!

A car rammed into my CR-V from behind at a stop light. The car that hit me had a huge dent on its hood from my rear-mounted spare tire -- again, the CR-V didn't even have a scratch.

I once thought my CR-V had a transmission problem, so I took it into a mechanic who looked confused and told me that "Hondas don't have transmission problems." He looked it over and drove it around -- everything was fine. I was just paranoid.

I am amazed that the CR-V ratings are all "happy faces", but the ratings for the 2000 Accord are about 1/3 "happy faces" and 2/3 "sad faces". How can reliability and customer satisfaction change so much from model to model?

Hmm that's exactly "it". Opinions change from model to model, simple fact of life. Some cars don't need further improvement, but "us" consumers don't understand this. Thus new models come out, with new and improved problems. Keep up on your research and you'll be a happy customer. Best of luck to everyone out there.

Hondas have their fair share of transmission problems. A late 90s Acura TL 3.2 is the same engine and tranny as V6 Accords. Also late 90s and early 2000s Civics often have tranny problems reported. Search around the web for this and also other reviews by owners such as msn.com.. there's plenty of crying happening.
