2002 Honda CR-V EX

Summary:

Weird problems, but still satisfied with the CR-V

Faults:

I had unusual problems with the right front caliper from the very start. The dealer replaced it three times. After the warranty expired, I took it to the guy who fixes my VW, and he installed after-market calipers. I haven't had an issue since.

The A/C compressor blew around 80K, and the dealer wanted $1700. I've found that the compressor was part of a class action suit. I never bothered to fix it -- I drive my VW Cabrio in the summer and park the CR-V.

The check engine light has been on constantly for the fuel cap seal.

An air flow sensor needs to be replaced (went out around 115K). I didn't bother with it last winter, but the car performs worse in cold weather with the bad sensor, so I'll probably fix that this fall when I switch cars.

ABS sensor came on around 120k, but was part of a recall and was fixed without charge.

The transmission light comes on randomly every few months and immediately goes out.

I didn't have any issues with prior Hondas (Civic and CRX), so the calipers and the compressor issues were disappointing.

General Comments:

The cargo space has been very handy.

It handles well in the rain. It's got the best wipers of any car I've had.

I wish I had waited until I could have found a manual transmission. The auto is boring.

2002 Honda CR-V EX

Summary:

Very good

Faults:

Like many CRV owners, the AC compressor blew. The car had 78,000 miles. Thanks to this board, I knew to call American Honda and filed a complaint. They worked with my local dealer and offered to pay for all but $500 of the repair. I said that they should have recalled the car BEFORE the compressor exploded and affected the entire system. I was firm but cordial. I expressed my anger, and they said they would look into it. The dealer diagnosed the problem and confirmed a $2000 repair bill.

General Comments:

Good car, very roomy, drives well, very reliable.

2002 Honda CR-V

Faults:

I bought my 2002 Honda CRV brand new, and have had A/C problems every 2 years like clockwork. Luckily the Honda dealer has covered the cost of the repair each time, and each time until now it has been a problem concerning the compressor, and the compressor has had to be replaced.

My car has been to the dealer 4 times now, with the 4th time being a problem with the dealership's repair.

I promised myself I would sell this vehicle before another 2 years went by, and well here I am 2 years later and still own the vehicle...

New problem though still with the A/C... don't think it is the compressor this time... maybe the switch that turns on because it just quit working one day... the blower/fan just stopped coming on and doesn't work for anything.. not the A/C, heater or defroster.

I haven't called the dealer yet because this does not seem to be the same problem it has had in the past, but several weeks after this happened, it all of a sudden came on and started blowing cool air as if nothing went wrong, but that was short lived as it was not working again once the vehicle was turned off and restarted again... This has happened 2 times now that it has started blowing again and then stopped again.

After reading all of this, I am going to call the dealer on this problem as well, and hope that it is just the switch and not some sort of electrical short. Either way, I expect the dealer to cover the cost and to pay for a rental while it's in the shop.

I will update this once I get an answer from the dealer. This is the first Honda I have ever owned, and will not buy another one. Oh.. also looking like the oxygen sensor will need to be replaced as well.
