1987 Honda CRX HF 1.5

Summary:

High speed, low maintenance, and looks great

Faults:

Bearings are wearing causing aloud wobbling noise.

Needs regular tune ups.

Heat/AC does not push air through vents.

General Comments:

Body is in excellent condition inside and out. A few dents that require little fixing, no cracks in windows, and paint is faded, but still looks good.

Interior is great. no warping on dash, all displays light up and function, nice pioneer stereo with Sony 2-way speakers. very loud.

Is very quick and quiet, lots of room for a 2 seater, and it has appeal.

Just curious, What kind of mileage do you get with your HF?

Our 1988 had a broken heater control cable unit under the dash that was the cause of the poor air/heat flow. Is about a $40.00 part if you can replace it yourself, otherwise about 2 hours of mechanics' shop time at $90.00 per hour (Canada).

I owned a 1991 Honda CRX "HF" and it got 58 MPG on the highway and 44 MPG in the city (with the air-conditioning on). And the motor had 212,000 miles on it at the time.

1987 Honda CRX Si 1.5L Fuel Injected

Summary:

Light, quick and nimble

Faults:

The synchro for the second gear is worn causing grinding while shifting into second gear.

There is rust starting to show around the hatch area.

General Comments:

This car has a very distinct power-band. The 1.5 liter engine doesn't make any real power until the tachometer hits 3000rpm. The engine accelerates incredibly all the way to its 6500rpm red line. It seems as if the top end power is endless. It could use a bit more low end grunt, but thats understandable with such a small 4 cylinder engine.

The interior of the car is a bit cramped and there seems to be minimal headroom. I am 6'4" and fit in the car adequately, but headroom is a bit limited.

The car has enough space to carry two passengers and a few groceries, but being what it is, a compact sports car, that's understandable.

The car handles well, but does tend to roll under hard cornering. Installing a thicker anti roll bar from a 86 Civic Wagon would solve this problem.

This car looks excellent and in my opinion, is the best affordable compact sports car Honda has ever made. Its fast and lightweight. Steeping on the throttle gives almost instant acceleration as the tachometer sweeps past 3000rpm.

1987 Honda CRX DX 1.5L: 3 Barrel

Summary:

A masterpiece

Faults:

Fuel Pump (It only costs $24 and it's on top of the engine so it was a very easy install)

Starter (I Think it's dying)

It burns oil quickly. I'm not sure if it's an engine problem or a leak.

General Comments:

I love it. It's small, cute, and very affordable. IT handles really well, but needs a strut upgrade for more comfort.

You said that the starter is going, I just wanted to tell you to be sure and check the contacts in the starter before replacing it. I thought the starter in my truck was going bad, but I replaced the contacts for 10$ and it works fine now.

1987 Honda CRX DX 1.5L

Summary:

I'm excited to drive it every time!

Faults:

Replaced the CV joints and boots now for the second time since I bought it.

The rear brake calipers came apart.

The ignition switch went twice.

Valve cover gasket replaced due to massive leak.

General Comments:

The gas mileage on this car is phenomenal! I have managed to get 52 miles per gallon holding 120 km/h. *I think that's what they boast with the NEW Toyota Echo's!*

Very comfortable.

Very reliable. The only time it didn't start was when it was -40 degrees C and it froze. I guess it wasn't plugged in after all...

1987 Honda CRX Si 16v 4 cylinder

Summary:

A cheap, reliable car that is fun to drive

Faults:

When I got it it needed the following:

Brake pads needed replacment.

The metal arm that connects the stick shift to the transmission was loose and needed tightening.

The car had bad rust on the body and two small holes needed patching, however the frame was OK.

I junked the car when it had multiple failures of the starter/ignition system and other electronic componants and I no longer needed the vehicle.

General Comments:

I loved this car. The 87 CRX is the best car I have ever owned. Keep in mind that I say this even considering the almost 400000 miles on the car when I got it, and the fact that previous owners really abused this car. Up until the last day I had the car it ran excellent. I finally got rid of it when the car had serious problems with the electrical system, but past this it drove like a charm up to the last day. It is a 5-speed manual, which the way I drove gave me almost 35mpg. The car accelerated very quickly and performed excellent. Assuming you can find one in good shape, I would reccomend this car to anyone looking for something that is low cost, VERY low upkeep, and fun to drive. Its tiny tho, so don't expect to haul the kids with it.
