1989 Honda CRX Si

Summary:

A real little ripper

Faults:

I have had to do some minor engine repairs.

I have replaced the muffler 3 times since I got it.

The body has not held up well to Canadian winters. It is rusting in several spots including the fenders.

I have replaced the CV joints twice and will have to do so again soon.

General Comments:

This car has heaps of power and when you punch the gas, it really hauls. Passing on the highway is no problem and it will carry you up a steep hill easily in 3rd or even 4th gear. The steering used to be crisp and responsive, but has started to become a little wishy-washy lately. It is still quite responsive although it doesn't handle really well in the snow. I have done many long trips in it and have had no complaints about being sore by the end of the trip. The only real disadvantage is that it is only a two seater so carrying more than one passenger isn't really an option, but I guess if you want to carry people, buy a minivan. When the back cover is folded down there is ample storage space, enough for 2 mountain bikes.

This was originally posted in 2002 but I am responding about the steering issue in case future Crx owners run into this problem. If your Crx's steering is becoming loose, not as tight/sharp as it used to be, please replace the inner and outer tie-rods. Hope this helps!

1989 Honda CRX DX

Summary:

Baby racer means business!

Faults:

She needed a new clutch when I bought her.

Nothing other than regular maintenance (brakes need to be done soon) and one of the headlight beam adjusters broke, so she had psycho eyes for a time, but it's fixed now.

General Comments:

I always have to tell her we can't race today... but she doesn't want to listen!

I'm going to keep her forever. And when later on I'm going to have 10 C-REX's in my parking lot at home.

Great on gas.

A happy Honda for sure.

1989 Honda CRX DX 1.6 DOHC

Summary:

My personal rocket

Faults:

When I purchased my Rex, it was in horrible condition. I replaced the timing belt when I first purchased the vehicle. I bought the car wrecked, so I had to do a good bit of work. I totally rebuilt the body, and got an incredible custom paint job. I have never had a problem starting the car, or keeping it running. My glove compartment broke.

General Comments:

A few engine upgrades, about two grand worth.

Replaced the engine and transmission from the Dx to Si.

This car is very quick and handles incredible.

I love taking hard corners at 100mph plus.

My favorite is racing the arrogant people in their Mustangs and Camaros and looking at them in my mirrors grinning.

Incredible gas mileage even when I red-line every shift.

1989 Honda CRX Si 1.6 SOCH

Summary:

Mind bending handling

Faults:

So far regular maintance has been all it needed.

Seats are a little torn up at side bolster.

General Comments:

I bought this car at 40k miles, and sold it at 50k to a friend. I then bought and sold a Mazda rx7 turbo, a Nissan 300zx turbo, a Mazda Miata, and a Porsche 914. well after all those cars I ended up buying the Honda back (at 60k miles) because I missed it so much. It runs better and smoother than all those cars and the handling is in a whole different category. to top it all off it has never broken down and the insurance people think it is a civic. far and away the best car I have ever owned and this time I am holding on to it. I have installed a performance cam, exhaust, and intake as well as lowered the suspension. bang for buck you can't beat it. I have a $4000 car with $1000 of upgrades and I can run circles around cars costing6 times that. if you can deal with only two seats then find one while you still can.

He probably means they most likely insure it as if it's a sedan instead of a sports coupe.
