2000 Honda Odyssey EX

Summary:

Overall it is a nice car, but reliablity is not in line with Honda reputation.

Faults:

The sliding door. First the driver side sliding door stay ajar (not completely closed). We had it fixed in the dealer with warranty time. Now the passenger side door is the same. It happened a few monthes ago. One day it worked again (it was a sunny day), but second day it stopped working again. I also have some brake problems. When I brake, you could feel the vibration of the car with the driving wheel.

General Comments:

Overall, it is a nice car. The acceleration is good.

I agree. The driver's side sliding door has been giving me problems since day 1. We received a recall notice for the latch, but it didn't do any good. 5 years later at 104000 miles we still have to push the door in so that it latches properly.

Also had a problem with the brakes except the steering wheel vibrates when you step on the brake. This van is the first that I've ever owned, but even I admit it does have a fair amount of problems for a Honda. However, you have to admit that it's sometimes better than other vans.

2000 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5L

Summary:

Excellent car except for the power sliding door latching problem

Faults:

Power sliding door would not close all the way.

General Comments:

I've had the same problem as most folks about the power sliding door not latching. I have to push the rear of the door to get it to latch properly. I've tried to reset the door by pulling out fuse 13, but that didn't help. I think Honda should extend its warranty on the sliding door or show us how to disconnect power to it so we could still use the doors manually. I've tried to removed the body panel that covers the sliding rail on the side of the car, but couldn't figure out how it was mounted. Removing the one screw holding the panel didn't help. Anyone has an idea of how to remove this panel? Seems to me that maybe the door was designed this way so that Honda could milk us even more after the short factory warranty ran out.

If you truly wish to use the door manually you can cut the cables that run the door. There are two. They both connect to the door at about the same location (one from the front and one from the back. The problem is if you do not unplug the door motors the buzzer will sound unless you turn the auto sliding door switch off on the dash board. You can take the cover off of the van that hides the motor, but I suggest you purchase the shop manual from the dealer. it cost about $70 but it will tell you in great detail how to remove the motor. It will take you about 3 hours to remove everything the first time. good luck.

2000 Honda Odyssey EX-L 3.5 V6 VTEC

Summary:

The best van on the market!

Faults:

The power sliding door motor and track assemblies needed replacement shortly after purchase.

The front brake pads and rotors needed replacement at 70K miles.

No other problems whatsoever.

General Comments:

This van has been nothing short of a dream come true for us. It is very comfortable, has ample power, and handles like a car rather than a van.

We are permanantly converted to Honda and will be customers for life.

Most of the complaints on this forum about the Odyssey are regarding the transmission and doors. Honda has a problem with these areas on this van. However, the lack of any other major issues is rarely mentioned. This van does not get enough credit. We love our Odyssey and we know it will provide more years of trouble-free service than any other competitor's so-called minivan. We have owned the Chrysler and Toyota vans, and they simply do not measure up.

I would have to agree!!! No to mention any names, but I work for Chrysler.. and I drive a 99 Odyssey EX. It's been in the family since brand new and has been the best vehicle BY FAR that we've ever owned. 132,000km on it now, many many trips all over Canada and the US, and never a problem. It really has been fabulous!! And for the other CRAP out there... they really don't stand up... I have lots of proof!! Happy Motoring in your Honda!!

I wanted to like this van but its poor craftsmanship has prevented that. A very poor showing from Honda.
