1988 Honda Prelude Si 4WS 2.0 DOHC

Summary:

A reliable car with good handling and performance

Faults:

Since it is an old car the driver seat was slightly worn when I purchased it. Other than this I have had no problems in my 6mo of ownership. Unfortunately I hit a curb last month (Oct) and it was written off.

General Comments:

The 4ws provided excellent handling and tight u-turns. It was a real joy to drive.

The interior is well designed and comfortable. However, if you are over 6ft tall you would find it very small.

Performance was good in the higher Rpms (basically anything over 3000).

In all it was a reliable car. Apart from routine maintenance and changing the thermostat ($10) I did nothing to this car.

1988 Honda Prelude Si 2.0

Summary:

Old reliable..

Faults:

A/C compressor and switch was replaced around 100,000 miles.

Both front axles were replaced at 110,000 miles.

The clutch has begun to slip and will need to be replaced soon.

Rear passenger side upper control arm has been replaced.

General Comments:

This is one of the most reliable cars I have ever owned.

The car just keeps going and purrs like a kitten.

I commute a total of 110 miles a day for work and this car is much more reliable than the 1998 Cadillac Catera that I also own.

I really like the exterior and interior styling.

The car is comfortable and great on gas.

I feel Honda is one of the best auto manufacturers.

1988 Honda Prelude Si 2.0

Summary:

A high performance, high maintenance car

Faults:

Leaking moon roof

I was driving to a meeting in a suit 1 week after buying the car, and it was raining outside. The water accumulated inside the roof cavity and splashed down on me. The very next week, we sealed the roof permanently.

Both head lamps dropped out after 2 months.

Timing belt replaced at 120000 miles.

Alternator died two months after timing belt repairs.

Hand brake is dead.

General Comments:

This car handles very well, if you can get it to start. There are so many times in the morning when we wake up to a wonderful day just to have it destroyed by the failure of yet another part.

1988 Honda Prelude Si 2.0 16v

Summary:

All around great car - Chicks dig it!

Faults:

New front rotors - $175.

Power steering pressure hose - $500 using an after-market part.

Had water in a taillight lens - drilled holes in the bottom to drain.

Air conditioning is empty.

Starting to rust away.

General Comments:

This car handles like a dream - 4WS rocks!

Quick enough, but could always be faster.

Great styling - interior and exterior.

Does everything very well especially parking. My next car must have 4WS (240SX maybe?)

Good on gas.

1988 Honda Prelude Si 4WS 2.0 DOHC

Summary:

Every car I've driven after this one has felt like a tank

Faults:

A car built in the 80's has a right to have things go wrong with it.

Worn CV joints, brakes, ie. general preventative maintenance.

I did however miss the cam seal leak which lead to the jumping and destruction of the timing belt.

ANYONE who argues with a mechanic about replacing the timing belt and water pump (at the same time) is going to get what's coming to them.

It is the heartbeat of the engine.

I rebuilt this engine minus a bore job in the engine compartment: pistons, rings, bearings, head completely rebuilt, water pump, belts "timing" cap rotor la la la.

$1,200 later it emerged from my garage again with a sweet purrring sound.

No one has $1,200 to throw at a problem that could have been avoided, no less $3,000+ if a shop fixes it.

Let my mistake be you guide to happiness.

General Comments:

The previous owner was my wife. She got this car in 1990 from the original owner. This car has been from Florida to California to North Carolina.

It has such a sweet four wheel glide up and down the interstate ramps.

Low end power of the Si leaves many behind at the lights.

The sway bars have this thing glued to the ground.

The interior is race ready with the lumbar supports in the seats and the acoustics of the car make for a wonderful sound chamber.

Whatever this car has taken from my pocket, it has given me back everything I want from a car.
