1988 Honda Prelude Si 2.0

Summary:

GET ONE, treat her well, blow all your money on her, and she'll repay you in her own way!!! :)

Faults:

Needed all new rotors, calipers, pads and oxygen sensor within the first week of owning it.

My driver side axle snapped right in the middle at 210000 km.

The front driver side spring broke at 225000 km and needed to be replaced so I went with an all around 2.25" drop spring set.

My front lower control arm bushings wore out at 225000 km.

General Comments:

My car is the best vehicle I've ever owned, despite the things that have gone wrong with it.

This car will teach you all about what loving a car means. Every cent spent on this car is worth the outcome.

My engine is at 230000 km and still purrs like a kitten. That in itself says a lot.

1988 Honda Prelude Si 4WS 2.0

Summary:

A great surprise of a car

Faults:

CV joint needed replaced. $300.

Thermometer died, car started to overheat. $165.

Timing belt broke and bent the valves. Had the engine rebuilt. $3000.

Brake caliper stuck and wore the brake and rotor down. $375.

General Comments:

If I didn't love this car so much I wouldn't have put the work into it.

I can beat people off the line with little or no effort.

4WS has spoiled me for other cars. I love this feature.

If you take regular care of the car and have your timing belt replaced when they tell you, it's a great first car.

1988 Honda Prelude Si 4WS 2.0

Summary:

An affordable, sporty performer that keeps punching for more gears!

Faults:

My right CV unit needs replacement.

Both fog lights are blown.

Fuses & horn.

General Comments:

1988 was definitely the Prelude's year!

Excellent handling, performance and exceptional gas mileage. The 4WS is incredible when parking and cornering at higher speeds.

Overall, the Prelude has an extremely comfortable cabin/cockpit with an "eye candy" appeal.

Maintenance free (for me anyways)!!

1988 Honda Prelude 4WS Si 2.0 4 cylinder

Summary:

An excellent first sports car with a fun ride

Faults:

I had a power steering fluid leak that was easily repaired.

My alternator just went.

General Comments:

This car turns on a dime.

Looks amazing, even after 12 years it looks brand new.

I love this car, it was my first import and I fell in love the first time I saw it.

Recommended to anyone who can afford Honda's ridiculous repair and maintenance bills.

I have the same problem with leaking power steering fluid under the hood. The dealer is trying to tell me that I need a steering rack based upon the leaking fluid only. I really doubt this assumption, though. Can you tell me what went wrong with yours and how it was fixed???

Remember there's a recall on the power steering pipe that goes over the exhaust manifold. I had this replaced for free a couple of years ago, and I wasn't the original owner.

Having a problem now, 2 years later, with the top blowing off the power steering fluid reservoir. Not sure what the fix is.

Happy with the car otherwise.

1988 Honda Prelude Si 4WS 2.0

Summary:

Suppose to be superior but more 1988 Buick on the road

Faults:

Engine noise that seems normal to dealer knowledge.

Fragile front train components.

General Comments:

Like most owners, quality feel, reliable despite its rusty condition. Need a budget to keep in top running condition.

If the noise you're talking about is a kind of rattle or what seems to be a lifter noise at 2000 RPM. Then it's just your header rubbing up against your oil pan. If you ever get GOOD headers it should go away.

Yeah.

1988 Honda Prelude SI 4WS 1.9

Summary:

A high performance bargain is an understatement

Faults:

Air conditioner doesn't blow cold sometimes. It could be working well on one trip, turn it off and back on and it doesn't get cold no more. Let it rest then it blows cold again. It's got me. But then again it's amazing that it works at all.

General Comments:

I bought this car from a dealership that used the car as a go for car. The dealer got it on a trade and it had so many miles on it he didn't put it up for sale. Instead he used to travel around to do business. The dealer put 10,000 miles on it and used it everyday. I saw the car sitting in the street one day and noticed it had 4WS. I asked him if I could drive it. He said yes. Loved the car the very first drive. Had to have it. I offered him 2K he said OK. Now it's mine.

This car still runs excellent and it drives excellent. Have had a number of cars in the past. Some of them were other Honda models. This car is it. It's not real fast but it's fun to drive. The steering is precise. The manual gear box is sweet. I drive a 136 miles every day and I am comfortable in the seat.

As far as maintenance goes, I've changed the oil once already and flushed refilled the radiator. A new Honda is about 26K for this model. That buys a lot of maintenance. I'll take an old Honda anyday.

I've only had my car for 3 weeks now and I love it. Lot of mileage (290,000 - 1988) but not too concerned about it has I have been told if oil is changed regularly it will last for ever. Purrs like a kitten. Body has been redone and it looks great. I think I made a very good deal. Gone from a Mazda pick up to this. Takes a bit of getting used to and I love it. Sure hope this is the beginning of a long lasting affair lol.
