2001 Hyundai Accent

Summary:

A joke and a blow to the ego

Faults:

Transmission gone in 2005.

Brakes in 2005.

Door handle coming off.

Dash lights don't work.

Timing belt gone a few times.

Burns and leaks oil.

That's just a few problems.. too many to list, such as failing aircare all the time.

Every 3 months I am paying for this car to get it fixed. Everything that can go wrong with a car does with this lemon.

General Comments:

Unreliable car. An embarrassment to drive.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

I know of no one who purchases a 2001 Hyundai Accent for their curb appeal any way. Even brand new, they don't exactly make girls go crazy, well, maybe with laughter...

As far as your problems with the car go, you listed many of the faults with the car, but how much preventative maintenance have you done? I don't mean fixing something when it breaks, but rather stuff BEFORE it goes south. Such as oil changes, transmission services (every 30k miles on this car), timing belts BEFORE they break (every 60k miles on this car). Any car from Hyundai to Bentley, requires regular scheduled maintenance to keep the mechanicals in proper working order. Your mechanic should be suggesting this to you. If he is not, then perhaps you should find another mechanic...

How on earth has your timing belt 'gone a few times'? Do you mean it has broken a few times, which on most modern engines means your engine is stuffed when this happened, as the pistons collide with the valves? If you mean it has had to be replaced a few a times due to mileage, you must have put many many miles on it, however you don't state any mileage in your review.

Summary:

I have never heard of a car's chassis rusting away at less than 40,000 miles

Faults:

The car has rusted completely away underneath; I was told by the dealer that last looked at it that not only was I looking at a minimum of four thousand dollars in repairs, but that the repairs were unlikely to fix the problem, and that basically the car was no longer roadworthy. It should be noted, that although the car is nine years old, it has less than 40,000 miles on the odometer.

Although this was an "as is" sale, I tried writing a letter of complaint to Hyundai's corporate offices. I was contacted by phone and told that since I did not have all my maintenance done by Hyundai dealers, they would not stand behind their product. As IF I am going to go to a dealer and pay $49.99 for an oil change when the Jiffy Lube down the street will do the same job for twenty bucks.

General Comments:

I bought the car in 2004; it was three years old, had 19,000 miles on it, and was as clean as you could want.

Great performance, and terrific on gas. A little on the noisy side, but that did not bother me much.

Quick and easy handling, and a wonderfully ergonomic dashboard.

If the car were not falling apart at less than 40,000 miles, I would still be enjoying it today.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

If the car spent it's life in a colder climate where salt is used on the roads each winter, then rust WILL become an issue. All vehicles subjected to these conditions should be undercoated before winter driving each year. If not, the metal will rust a LOT faster!!

Well I just want to share this personal experience with you. I used to take my cars to Jiffylube for an oil change, and I always ended up paying a little over 40 bucks. When I got my new Accent in 2009, I took it for its first oil change at the dealer, and they only charged around 27.00 dollars for an oil change, and they also wash your car and fill up your wiper fluid.

In conclusion, it's actually cheaper taking the car for an oil change at the dealer than Jiffylube.

Next time you buy a vehicle, have it oil-sprayed before winter driving. If not, your "investment" will not last as long...
