2001 Hyundai Accent GS 1.6

Faults:

Sensors had to be replaced constantly. My car would start to accelerate at a complete stop to the point in which the brakes were useless. My Rpms would rev up to 6000.

My brakes were replaced 3 times in 2 years. I went to the dealership for my squealing brakes and they told me there was dust on my brakes and within 3 weeks my rotors were burnt into.

I was 5000 miles over on my oil change and I blew a rod through my motor which wasn't replace by warranty.

My car was in the shop 18 times within 3 years before it finally died.

I have had my Accent for 3 years and 60000 miles. I have changed the oil every 3000 miles with a synthetic blend. Not one problem. I must say you need to change the oil every 3000 miles and get the extended warranty.

A small motor, and excessive use with out changing the oil. What do you expect? only 5000 miles over...

If you are that lazy that you went 5,000 miles over on your oil change, you deserve to have a blown motor.

You strike me as the type of person who drives on under inflated tires and then complains when they blow out.

Hope you learned a valuable lesson. try to find another way to pinch $20 out of your budget other than neglecting an oil change.

Hydraulic lifters - no oil pressure, valve train running hot DOHC.

Car : Hyundai Accent 2001 GS.

Sump has been removed and oil pickup cleaned.

Diesel oil was used, but following this after 100 kilometres, was a loss of oil pressure. When I removed the sump and valve cover, I replaced it with car motor oil.

2001 Hyundai Accent GL 1.6L DOHC

Summary:

Good car, but beware: 100k mile Warranty covers little

Faults:

Throttle position sensor at 30k.

Plug wires at 60k (maintenance) ($135 installed at dealer, $35 for aftermarket set). Very easy change--why the big cost at the dealer?

Map sensor at 60k--dealer said this was out of warranty and wanted $200. I gave a big 'no.' There was oil in the intake that killed the MAP (pinched PCV hose). I Replaced PCV hose ($1) and did MAP sensor myself ($60--dealer part).

HVAC blend doors (hot/cold and vent blender) hang up at 60k. Wiggle to loosen--not covered under warranty (surprise). I live with it--no big deal.

Timing belt: $400 installed at dealer. Aftermarket belt is $30. You need a special tool to get the timing cover off, though.

My special method: drill the head of the special bolt out until it falls off. Use an easy-out to get the threads out of the hole. Matched threads & length to a bolt at a local hardware store, and replace with a hex bolt & washer.

Kudos to the do-it-yourselfer-deterrent folks at Hyundai.

General Comments:

A good car overall, excellent fuel economy (28/38 mpg). Lots of pep for an economy car.

An obligatory trade-off:

It rides like a small car (rough & noisy).

It handles like a small car (very agile).

I fit in the driver's seat nicely (6'1").

The warranty is not all it is cracked up to be--most things are not covered very long. I was surprised to see how few parts are actually considered 'powertrain.' Most (90%) of the car is out of warranty at 60000. Ignore the TV commercials about "America's best warranty."

Aftermarket parts are uncommon, therefore most non-maintenance parts must be purchased from dealer at great expense.

For a foreign car with 4 valves per cylinder, it is very easy to work on. Underhood layout is very logical.

2001 Hyundai Accent GL 1.6

Summary:

Reliable motoring at an affordable price

Faults:

Wheel bearings failed at 75000km.

Rear brakes needed replacing at 75000km (drums cylinder pads and pipes)

The windshield wipers are very poor quality and leave streaks on the glass at speeds above 80km/h.

General Comments:

Needed a low mileage car to drive into the ground at a fast speed and I got it with this. I am a bit disappointed that the wheel bearings didn't last longer, but since they were fixed its been fantastic.

Its quick, roomy comfortable economical to run and always starts first time, even in the depths of a Canadian winter. It travels 250km a day and has not complained once.

I am the originator of this review.

We are now at 151,000km with this car and its still going strong. Since the last review:

Braking system replaced IN ITS ENTIRETY FOUR TIMES.

Power steering replaced.

Other than that its pretty reliable. It still starts first time every time, even when its parked outside in the winter. Mileage is good averaging 500km on a tankful, more on the highway, less round town.

Its starting to sound a bit loud and clunky now, at idling, but its still responsive and acceleration is still good.

One small area of rust appearing on the driver's door sill, but that's all.

Cracked windshield due to cold temperatures.

My only gripe with this car its its awful cheap shoddy brakes. I will keep this car until it dies, but I really resent having to replace the braking system every nine months.
