Faults:

At 70,000 miles, the automatic transmission totally failed costing $2000 for replacement.

At 50,000 miles, the airbag light stayed constantly on.

Replaced three bent stock wheels thanks to hitting potholes (due to the extremely harsh suspension.)

Several plastic trim pieces have fallen off, like the covers for the sunroof vents, seat adjustment handles, etc.

Foul smell in A/C system three months after purchase.

Power sunroof has trouble sealing fully, which is solved by pushing a metal strip downward while closing.

General Comments:

The car is fairly nice looking in great condition, kinda like an older BMW, but far from it in terms of quality, comfort, and performance.

For the price, the car has a lot of standard features, which makes it appealing to new buyers.

Resell value is totally horrible so buyers beware...

For being a 4-door sedan, this car has a very harsh suspension (but thank goodness the seats ave very comfy of this would be very uncomfortable.)

The engine sounds very powerful (on paper, hehehehe.) but is very average on acceleration and isn't the most fuel thrifty vehicle either for a 4-cylinder engine-- about 23 MPG around city, but about 30 MPG on highway cruising.

Faults:

As of now the only problems that have surfaced is a problem with opening the back left side passenger door at one time. Another problem is when locked driver side door opens with a little pulling of the handle. When the vehicle hits 47 miles per hour the right front wheel vibrates, when 47 is exceeded the vibration ceases. I believe with a set of new tires and rims this vibration should stop. I believe with a little patience any vehicle can operate at maximum. In my mind the performance of the 1995 Hyundai Elantra compared to the performance of a 1989 Ford Probe speaks well for the Elantra, remember time and usage is a key factor. That is the mind of this reviewer thank for your time.

Faults:

The electric door lock on the driver's side, which controls all other door locks, sometimes fails to operate the other locks. I believe this is due to a loose or corroded electrical contact in the driver's door.

The idle speed somehow got out of proper adjustment and was very erratic for a few days. I took it to the dealer and they showed me where the adjustment screw is and after a quick turn with a philips head screwdriver everything was back to normal.

The material used on the steering wheel is wearing poorly.

The air-conditioner is rather weak and could use improving.

General Comments:

I was not happy at all with my previous 1989 Hyundai Sonata. I swore I would never buy another Hyundai. It happened to be the first year model of the Sonata and I've been told by others that first year models commonly have problems. It was definitely a lemon.

I have since changed my opinion about Hyundai. I am very happy with my 1995 Elantra GLS. No, I would not compare it to a Lexus, but for the cost to buy and operate, I feel that it has been money well spent.

I believe that Hyundai has realized that it needed to change its reputation in the American automobile market. Their vehicles needed to be more reliable and I feel that they are now proving that to be true.

Other than regular oil and fluid changes, one battery, and a set of new tires, the car has been very easy on my wallet. In fact, It still has the original brakes and clutch.

Faults:

Middle rear seat-belt buckle broken when bought used in 1998.

Front Driver's side door handle broke in 1999.

Trasmission problems with 1st & 2nd gear in 2002.

Key has never worked to open trunk.

General Comments:

I took six people in 1999 from Milwaukee, WI to Los Angeles, CA driving straight through, almost two days one way, to get to LAX in time to meet our flight for Honolulu. I currently have almost 150,000 miles on th car and have just had my first major problem. The transmission has is going and doesn't shift right away into second gear. The car moves once it gets into second gear. I would advise you to be careful when you press the resume button when on the freeway on ramp, almost ended up in the backseat.
