1997 Hyundai Elantra
Summary:
Fun to drive, but will Shanghai you with unexpected big repair bills which Hyundai will not help pay
Faults:
Transmission failed at 142,000 km.
Exhaust manifold cracked at 200,000 kms without the engine EVER having overheated.
General Comments:
I have owned many cars over the last 40 years and have NEVER ever had a problem with a cracked exhaust manifold.
Anyone else with these kinds of problems should call Hyundai Customer Service and let them know 1-800-461-8242.
When I called them they told me no one has ever complained about these kinds of problems before, but I see there are many posted here on the net in this and other forums.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

I have a 1997 GLS with 103,000 miles and it also has a cracked exhaust manifold without ever having overheated. Besides from that, this car has been VERY reliable.

I have a 96 Hyundai Elantra and I had to repair the transmission now the manifold is cracked. What else can possible go wrong? Now you know why they sell so cheap.

They also told me I had a "cracked manifold" in my '93 Excel.. car was VERY loud. I took a look myself and realized what it was, replaced the little "donut" gasket (which was all it really needed) and car's been fine since. Don't let em rip you off..
